SEO Report Card: Error Pages Create Big Issues

Modernmini sells modern-style babies' and children's furniture, toys, bedding and more. Its site is powered by the Zoovy platform. Founder Pazit Kagel, a designer and mother of three, requested a site grade, and I'm happy to oblige.

1. The URLs contain session IDs — a no-no for SEO — but upon review of the cached version of the home page, I was relieved to find the session IDs are not being assigned to Googlebot. It appears there is "bot detection" happening behind the scenes, so when a spider like Googlebot is detected, session IDs are removed from the URLs in the links.

I double-checked and none of the session ID-containing URLs have made it into Google's index. The session ID notwithstanding, the "product" and "category" URLs are relatively friendly to search engines. However, the product URLs do not contain keywords; they are product number-based. Ideally, the URLs should include keywords.

2. The "shop by product" and "shop by department" nav buttons are set up as mouseovers with lots of text links under the mouseover. The mouseovers are executed as CSS, so the links function as crawlable static text links — ehhh-xcellent! (as Mr. Burns would say).

3. The site doesn't do a 301 redirect from Modernmini.com to www.modernmini.com, which means two copies of the site will get indexed — one at www.modernmini.com, and one at modernmini.com. A number of pages appear in Google's Supplemental Index. Many of these are Modernmini.com pages rather than www.modernmini.com. Installing the proper redirects should clean up some of these supplemental results.

4. In the category and product pages, "Modernmini" is the first word in the title tag. That is not ideal; important keywords should lead in the title tag and "Modernmini" is not a useful keyword. I wouldn't bother moving it to the end of the title tag. I recommend it just be removed.

5. It would be nice to see the main content of the page higher up in the HTML in a more prominent spot. Using CSS, you can reorder the HTML — putting the left-hand nav lower in the HTML with content placed above it. Prominence could be further enhanced by removing the inline CSS code that bloats the page; instead, place it in an external CSS file.

6. The site uses breadcrumb navigation, but unfortunately, the breadcrumb all but disappears at the product level — only the "home" part of the breadcrumb remains. This seems to be a bug.

7. It is not clear from the title tag or from the body copy what the main keyword theme of the home page is. I would think that "children's furniture" or "baby furniture" would be appropriate keywords to target, but surprisingly the word "furniture" doesn't appear on the home page at all — only tucked away in the meta description tag, which won't help Modernmini's rankings.

8. Product names are used as the title tag content on the product pages. Sometimes this approach is fine, and sometimes it's less than ideal. For example, the Celery Lullaboo Rocking Cradle really should include the keywords "baby" and/or "infant" in the title tag, and probably "wood" or "wooden" as well.

9. The product pages do not make use of H1 heading tags. The product name is not given extra weight by the search engines, as it employs the same font treatment as the rest of the copy.

10. The site could really use a custom 404 error page. Given the number of Modernmini listings in both Google's and Yahoo!'s indices that lead to those very ugly "404 Not Found" error pages, fixing this problem should be a priority that gets prompt attention. The Modernmini.com site appears to have suffered in the past from a server misconfiguration that allowed error pages to get indexed.

The misconfiguration has been rectified, but many of these broken pages are still hanging around. Thus, visitors directed by the engines to such pages have a poor user experience; they are unlikely to do anything but immediately click out of the site. Develop a custom error page to suggest related pages (based on the visitor's search query) and prominently offer a search box and site map.

Winds of Change: Technical SEO Raises Results

Once in awhile we have one of these raging debates that takes place about whether all SEOs are crooks. This is not the word people always use, but when they offer up the opinion that SEO doesn't really work, this what they are really saying about the people who practice it. I always stay out of these discussions, because I have nothing to defend. The real bottom line question that each SEO, and each of their clients must ask is "did the traffic of the client's Web site increase after the changes were made?".

If you are a professional SEO, and the great majority of the time you can answer this question "yes", you have nothing to defend either.

But let's dig into the mechanics of SEO a bit further. You have to differentiate between technical SEO, content planning and implementation, and Web marketing when you talk about SEO these days. Technical SEO includes the following types of activities:

Keyword research
Picking smart title tags and page headers
Making sure that the major pages of the site are text rich
Implementing alt tags
Reviewing anchor text used on site
Reviewing and optimizing site navigation
Eliminating any spammy practices, such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, or hidden text
Content planning and implementation relates more to the deployment of quality articles on the site. While this overlaps with the notion of making sure that pages are text rich, the actual article selection and writing are a bit of a different task. Of course, technical SEO includes making sure that the articles have the right titles and headers, and are reasonably keyword rich. However, usually I find when you provide a knowledgeable writer a topic and a suggested title, that you will get a keyword rich article back without having to do anything more.

The Web marketing piece is very straightforward. This is the process of getting links to your site. This plays a huge role in a successful SEO campaign, as links are still a critical factor in search engine rankings.

But today, let's focus on the impact of technical SEO, with a case study submitted by Aaron Eden, a technical project manager at the Stevenson School.

Fair winds were not blowing for Tradewinds Carmel. The initial site design was poorly optimized from an SEO perspective. Here were some of the problems on the site:

All the links on the home page were implemented using images
Titles to all the pages were identical
None of the pages made use of HTML headers
Alt tags were not implemented on the images
On site content was OK, but a bit thin on keyword richness
The site was significantly revamped to improve all of these areas. Keyword rich titles, headers, and Alt tags were implemented, and the content was revamped to increase its keyword richness. Note that in reviewing this case study, I took the time to look at The Wayback Machine and looked at the site as it existed in April of 2006.

While the person who submitted the study to me, Aaron Eden, provided a summary of the changes made, I did not rely on these in putting together this article. I reviewed the April 2006 version of the site and the current live site to analyze and compare the differences. So you can consider the itemization of the problems, and the changes that were made as "audited results".

The SEO changes were made in the middle of 2006, and it brought about significant results. Here are the results to the visitor traffic:

Click on thumbnail to view full-size chartThere is a nice lift in the visitor data, with it nearly doubling. As is common with SEO, it does take time for the search engine robots to pick up on the changes to a site, and make updates to their index.

The result on the bottom line was dramatic too. Looking at December '06 revenues vs. December '05 revenues, there was a gain of 8%. By April of '07, however, the revenue lift over April '06 had grown to 35%. Technical SEO may not be particularly sexy or fashionable, but done well, it brings results.

Should You Focus on the "Small Stuff" in SEO?

Kevin Newcomb starts an interesting thread at Search Engine Watch Forums about a "debate" that is going on in SEO. He cites two blog posts, one from Jill Whalen, who says that you shouldn't sweat the small stuff. However, my BFF Lisa played devil's advocate and said that you should sweat the small stuff and that every detail matters.

Kevin says:

I'm of the opinion that every incremental thing you can do to improve your site is worthwhile, even if it helps in a very small way. The important thing is to keep the effort required to do the small things in line with the potential return, and to prioritize your time to make sure the big stuff gets done first.
How important is the "small stuff" to other forum readers?

A number of people felt that this line summed it up:

I say don't sweat the small stuff, just DO the small stuff.
But some people actually put a lot more emphasis on the small stuff to reap the benefits:

I would always practice SEO discipline i.e. sweating the small stuff; it creates great SEO habits, which in turns equates to more successes. Additional, who know when Google will change their algo, and it may turn out that one of the small factors become more weighted.
Do you sweat the small stuff? I tend to agree with the last quote: sweating over minor details does help me focus on becoming a better SEO, too. Therefore, I'm with Lisa. I know she'll be proud.

SEO Title Tag - Customize Your Title Tags

The SEO Title tag is a plugin that I've known about for a while, but never messed with. Boy was I missing out.

What SEO Title Tag does is add the ability to customize your blog's title tags per post. No longer are they tied directly to the post title. You can customize almost any title tag across your blog giving your site a possible edge in search engines.

One can customize individual posts, categories or pages. The default Wordpress title tags are OK, Optimal Title makes them better, SEO Title Tag makes them into whatever you want them to be.

There is also the ability to customize the separator, create a shot blog name to show on post pages, remove the blog name from post pages, use category descriptions as titles on category pages and tie the Title tags into UTW (Ultimate Tag Warrior).

Title tags are easy to customize too. They can be mass customized though the plugin options under the Manage tab or you can also create the titles as you create your post as it adds a custom 'Title Tag' field to the post screen.

I really like the SEO Title Tag plugin and think it's an excellent addition to any Wordpress blog. For search engine friendlessness, it's right up there with Headspace.

Have you ever wondered which are the best free SEO tools available on the Internet? Well here is my top ten list, so listen closely.

Free SEO Tool #10: Top Ten Analysis SEO Tool at http://www.webuildpages.com/cool-seo-tool/ is a great way to get a snapshot of your top ten competitors at Google for any given search term.

Free SEO Tool #9: Go Rank Analyzer at http://www.gorank.com/analyze.php reviews your web page for a given search term to give you a snapshot of how the search term shows up on the page. Actually, this probably should be higher up on the list. In other words, I should use it more often.

Free SEO Tool #8: Aftervote at http://younanimous.com/ is a really different tool, and I’m not sure too many people would think of it as an SEO tool. It is, in fact, a meta search engine that combines the results of Google, Yahoo and MSN, along with some other factors to provide its own original results. So you can see at a glance which sites are doing well for a given search term across all three engines. It also features a number of performance indicators, including Google PageRank, Alexa ranking, Compete page strength, and a link to see the WhoIs data. You can also add a whole slew of plugins, including Netcraft reports and submission links for Digg and other social bookmarking websites. In short, this is a great all-in-one tool for sizing up the competition for an individual search term or for finding joint venture or link partners of value. One of the handy features is that you can see the Alexa ratings for some of your top competitors at once, so you can better judge the value of your own Alexa rating. Hmm. Actually, Aftervote is a bit like #10 above.

Free SEO Tool #7: Overture Keyword Selection Tool at http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ is useable. OK, this is one area where Mr. Cheapie here is willing to pay the big bucks, specifically for Keyword Discovery. But if you really want a free tool, Overture can really help. It just doesn’t carry over search data from previous months, so if data is seasonal, you have to wait until, say, the Christmas season to do the keyword research that will carry you next Christmas.

Free SEO Tool #6: Google Toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_pack.html is pretty useful. Sure people make way too much of it, but the little green bar gives an instantaneous snapshot of the value of a page. No green, and you might as well check the drop-down to make sure a page is cached. If it’s not, forget it. The difference between a PR2 and PR4 might be irrelevant in practical terms, despite the world wars and family feuds that can be fought over such minutia, but if the Toolbar shows a PR5, that’s pretty impressive (if it is real). If all you need is a quick snapshot, use the toolbar. If you want better info, use the Page Strength Tool or another.

Free SEO Tool #5: Spider simulator at http://www.webconfs.com/search-engine-spider-simulator.php . This lets you see at a glance what the search engines see, which links they can follow and what text they see. I have often found major problems much quicker this way than wading through a jungle of code. It can also be helpful for locating hidden text and hidden links on competitors’ websites if you think they are all a bunch of thieving hooligans. There are probably hundreds of spider simulators of similar quality. I use this one; it works for me.

Free SEO Tool #4: Social Bookmarking Aggregator Tool at http://www.seo-writer.com/tools/bookmarker.php should really be at #1, given that I created it and it is, of course, perfect. But it is more of a viral tool than an SEO tool. Still, the more people bookmark your pages, the more links they build and the more bloggers are likely to pick up on the bookmark and build links – all natural links the way Google and Yahoo like them! And it’s available in Spanish, too, at http://es.seo-writer.com/tools/bookmarker.php Go to the bottom of this post right now and click on the social bookmarking links to bookmark this post. You’ll see how it works and make me happy all at once.

Free SEO Tool #3: Common Links at http://www.randycullom.com/common_link.php is an even more ingenious backlink tool than Yahoo Site Explorer, but it is less flexible. Pick a search term, and plug it in. It will tell you which are the top ten sites for that term at Google or at Yahoo, then get the common backlinks. For instance, if a page links to three of the top ten websites for a certain search term, chances are that the same page is more likely to link to your similar website than a page that links to only one of your competitors (and could be the owners’ mother’s website, a satisfied client, a supplier, a buddy, another site owned by the same person, etc.)

Free SEO Tool #2: Yahoo Site Explorer, at https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ shows pages indexed and backlinks to either the site as a whole or to a specific page. This is superb competitive intelligence. You can mine your competitors’ backlinks to create your own backlinks. Unlike Google, Yahoo gives you the whole list. Why stop at your competitors? Why not look for complementary websites and what their backlinks are, too?

Free SEO Tool #1 - SEOmoz PageStrength Tool at http://www.seomoz.org/page-strength/ is a superb alternative the Google Toolbar’s PageRank measure. I like the PageStrength Tool because it pulls information from a number of indicators – including the Google PageRank toolbar – and provides a composite view of how important a page is. This is useful in evaluating potential partners, purchasing domains, sizing up the competition, etc. However, it does have some limitations. I have noticed that it sometimes draws inaccurate backlink data from Yahoo, and it gives big marks to certain very specific criteria, such as links from Wikipedia and Digg, rather than from a range of major Web 2.0 sites. Still, it does include age of domain and Alexa ranking, both of which are also important, as well as a number of other indicators totally lost on the Google Toolbar addicts (and we all know how reliable the Google toolbar is every third Tuesday of even numbered months!). In some ways, this is similar to Aftervote and to the Top Ten Analysis SEO Tool, but it is a little more sophisticated.

So there you have it, my top ten list of free SEO tools. And no sooner will I hit the “publish” button, that I’ll tell myself that I really did not put them in the right order.

Google's Universal Search: Where Video and SEO Meet

GOOGLE'S NEW UNIVERSAL SEARCH MODEL will aggregate information from across all of the search giant's content sources--videos, images, news, maps, books and Web sites--into a single set of relevant results.

Announced at the Google Searchology event, and with full national functionality slated for the end of today, the company's goal for universal search is to create "a seamless, integrated experience to get users the best answers," said Marissa Mayer, Google vice president of search products and user experience at Google.

A user that inputs "Italian restaurant in nyc" for example, might find local search listings complete with a Google Map, above a link to breaking news on New York City restaurants, in addition to sponsored and organic links. Users will also be able to play embedded videos from Google Videos or YouTube directly on the page, while a thumbnail will link them to videos hosted by other sites like MetaCafe.

The task of pulling various types of data together, comparing, and ranking them with the speed and accuracy to which users have become accustomed requires new algorithms, software and hardware--part of the new technical infrastructure Google is in the process of installing.

Some industry insiders said the universal search model may pose challenges for both users and marketers. "It takes away from the beautiful uniformity that has made Google so successful," said blogger and competitive Web master John Andrews.

While not a jarring change, as the search giant has been implementing aspects of this capability over the past few months, "on first glance, it seems a bit inconsistent," said Dan Thies, president, SEO Research Labs. "Users may wonder what kinds of results they're going to get when they enter a search term."

For marketers, the new search model's inclusion of media such as video and scanned books puts the onus on them to increase the breadth of their readily accessible digital content. "Advertisers need to have more multimedia available, and it needs to be catalogued and tagged in the right way," said Chris Copeland, senior partner, managing director of GroupM's Outrider. "We have to make sure that they apply the fundamentals of SEO to all of their assets now, not just Web pages."

Asked whether the universal search model would impact the speed or quality of results, Google Vice President of Engineering Udi Manber responded: "We continue to concentrate on improving the quality of search, devoting resources to developing better ranking mechanisms and algorithms."

The Most Important SEO Skill

Lee Odden posted an interesting poll today asking the question what type of SEO skill is most important. I think the best answer to the question really is the ability to gain expertise in a variety of the skills Lee listed. Lee himself says the best answer to the question should probably start with “It depends on the situation.” Still I voted for one and thought I’d share some thoughts on why I voted the way I did here.

First here’s the list Lee created:

* Account management

* Blackhat skillzBlog marketing

* Coding

* Copywriting

* Creative and design

* Keyword analysis

* Marketing strategy

* Media and link buying

* Online PR for SEO

* Online research and search

* Sales process consulting

* Server side issues

* Social media for SEO

* Traditional link building

* Web analytics

You could easily make a good argument for at least half of these, but my own choice was copywriting. Perhaps had I looked at the poll a day later or earlier I might have chosen something else, but copywriting would still be high on my list and it was my choice earlier today when I came across the poll.

Why did I make that choice? Again my real answer is that being able to master as many of these as you can is the most important skill. But the choice in copywriting is due to where I think seo has been and where it’s going. Search engines don’t give on-page seo the same weight they once did, but being able to write a page with search engines in mind is still important. I’ll even argue that in less competitive markets it might be all you need to rank well, at least until your competition catches up with you.

More importantly is where I see seo heading. Link data is still going to have the most weight and impact for awhile, but having good copy is becoming even more important in regards to building links. There’s so much out there you need to stand out if you want links. When it comes to link building through social media having excellent copywriting skills is a big plus.

Search engines are also making it clear that they are looking at user behavior and traffic patterns more and in time those sites that are the stickiest, that retain new visitors longer and bring back repeat visitors more often will gain rank. In addition to search engines, social media is becoming the starting point for many and having quality copy is only going to lead to more votes and more visibility in social media.

For me it comes down to the idea of content is king not so much for the direct ranking benefit of on-page factors, but rather that content is what brings links and visitors into your site. Content is also what will keep them there longer and bring them back. And while content doesn’t have to be the written word, most of the time it will be.

I see copywriters as being the most valuable resource of any online business in the near future if that isn’t already the case now. It could be argued that unless you have a site coded to meet minimum standards or if your design is so poor no one will get to your copy. You could argue that without an understanding of marketing strategy and who your target customer is your copy may miss the mark completely. You could argue that without the proper keyword analysis you’ll be bringing the wrong visitors into your site. All of these are excellent arguments and as I said at the start you could easily build a case for any of them and more from the list.

Still I think your content is the backbone of your site. If the quality is there people will find you and tell others about you. They will put up with a site that’s not too attractive or has occasional hiccups displaying. People will link to valuable content no matter how it’s packaged and they’ll return for more.

David Naylor, the creator of the tool, explains that one of his clients accidentally blocked all robots to his site and found himself out of the search engines. So he decided to build this tool to make it easy for webmasters to make valid robots.txt files.

Term Targeting
SEOmoz created this tool for their premium members and say they may open it up later to all users. The tool "analyzes the content of a given page and extracts the terms and phrases that appear to be targeted at search engines."

Crawl Test Tool

Selling SEO Services Typically a Bad Business Model?

John Andrews recently wrote an article about how consumer ignorance and carnival barkers lead to a market that is a self fulfilling prophecy:

There is so much so-called SEO out there, mostly outdated, baseless, or downright wrong, that the accessible information is more wrong than right. A Google or Yahoo! search on SEO topics is ridiculous, for many reasons. Often accurate SEO information is considered trade secret by knowledge consultants, and thus is not very accessible. What appears in front of the inquisitive SEO consumer is mostly junk. This puts the prospective SEO client at a distinct disadvantage, and provides an opportunity for the contract-seeking “snake oil SEO salesman” to close a deal at a good profit, often without realistic accountability or other consumer safeguards in place. But, as the 2001 Nobel Prize winning economist George Akerlof showed in his famous paper “A Market for Lemons”, asymmetrical information does much more than that. It actual can destroy the market for true, quality SEO.

Add to the above the following

* introduction to SEO via spam emails or cold calls from providers who know nothing about the concept of search

* spammy link exchange emails

* low quality sites ranking because they are old and links flowed easier in the past

* a rapidly changing marketplace

* hosts that scam their customers for an extra $30 a year selling fake submission services

* search engines that sell ads to the scam services and talk down the value of the high end services

Their is no reason to be surprised at how bad the service selling market is for many SEOs.

There are many other markets where the same type of market develops. In some cases it is even a sub-market of the whole that turns to trash. If your main keywords for your target market include discount / cheap / similar buzz words in your market then you might be selling to an audience that is not worth selling to, especially if your product is expensive or your service is time intensive.

Google Categories (Changes to Competitive SEO)

Lee Odden blogged about Google Categories yesterday. I wasn’t able to duplicate the categories look, but it did get me thinking about the ramifications to online competition if categories in search become commonplace. As well as how categories might influence our SEO strategies as business owners.

Competing in the non-online marketplace has been a focus of research, and resulted in various competitive philosophies put forth by some of the most respected academic business minds in the world. Michael Porter of Harvard fame is one who has essentially dedicated his entire academic life to the concepts of competitiveness, and is seen my many (including myself) as the foremost expert in traditional competitive strategic analysis. But it is interesting to note, competing online is a bit of a different animal, and requires a different approach many traditional marketers aren’t quite comfortable yet. Let’s take the shoe industry for example. Locally I can think of maybe a couple dozen places I could go and buy shoes, depending on what type of shoe I was looking for. So these local shoe resellers now compete against one another to attract my business. They buy newspaper and radio ads, do mailings, maybe rent a billboard, but they each attempt to get their message out to us, to keep us coming to them, and hopefully staying away from their competitors. But they now also need to keep our attention away from online shoe retailers, which is quite a different task many brick and mortar shops have not faced, but they really need to, as more potential clients find online shopping more appealing. Personally, I can’t remember the last time I bought shoes from a local brick and mortar store. I usually buy from Zappos.com… because I love the huge selection, the customer reviews, the free overnight shipping, and the free shipping on returns. It is a fabulous, no hassle system in my mind. Not to mention I don’t have to drive to the mall, deal with the crowds, or with my 2 year old daughter demanding to ride the “wee” (her term for slide) at the mall’s germ ridden treehouse (playground). It is a cesspool of all things icky (bless my wife for always having some Purell on hand to keep me sane).

So as more brick and mortar shops finally decide they also need to have an online presence, they will quickly determine the online competitive environment is a very different animal, and frankly intimidating for many. Not only are there far more competitors, as the geographical bounds are erased, but there are also non-retail sites competing for the same precious keywords. For example, if you type in “running shoes” in Google, you will see both online shoes stores, but also sites which review running shoes listed in the SERPs. So online retailers have to not only compete against more than just other retailers for keywords, but against information sites as well, as they attempt to squeeze onto the first SERP.

I have mentioned in previous posts that we use SEO techniques to improve our sites, so they perform better than our competitors sites, but we pay little attention to other sites competing for the same keywords, but aren’t selling the same products, or are just informational sites. For example, we personally don’t care if Wikipedia ranks higher than our site for a particular keyword(s), since a potential customer can’t buy the products we sell from Wiki. We don’t consider Wikiesque sites an important aspect to our competitor focused SEO efforts. But how would Google’s Categories SERP influence competitive SEO efforts? In the Google screen shot in Lee’s post, we can see the categories listed as Comparison Shopping, Reviews, Stores, References and Others. I would be interested to know how these categories were decided upon, and if these will be the only categories for every search return, or will the search categories change based on the term searched? Is the order of the categories consistent, or will it change based on the keyword searched? We will need answers to these questions to assist our SEO strategies. Obviously Google will need to be aware of those which will attempt to game the system and get their site listed in the top category, or in as many categories as possible, without regard to which category they should properly be placed within. I would imagine Google will only allow any given domain to be included in one category, period, or will have some protocol in place to best deal with these issues and how to police the system to hopefully be as efficient and relevant as possible.

Despite all the potential headaches Google might face, I like the idea of searches organized by category. And what I like most as a business person, is through a search engine category system, the online competitive environment would more closely mirror the non-online competitive world. Now retailers can compete to be included in the Stores section of a SERP, and Wikipedia and others will be relegated to the References or Reviews sections where they belong. Also, as a searcher out to buy a product, hopefully it will be possible to set my preferences to drop the sites in the Reviews, References and Others sections, so I would just get a page full of retailers for me to peruse, perfect! Then, if we also throw the whole concept of Local search into the discussion, all of a sudden I could see the same couple dozen local shoes stores mentioned earlier listed on a locally-based, shoe oriented SERP. That would be pretty cool, I still won’t buy from them, but it would be pretty cool. ;) As they now would compete against one another, as they have been doing in the “real world” for quite some time. Pretty interesting stuff.

When ranking Internet shopping carts and web portals, the search engines take 3 factors into account: Onpage SEO factors, Accessibility SEO factors and most importantly Off-page SEO factors.

On-Page SEO factors

On-page SEO refers to what can be done on the page of a website to improve its performance in the SERPs for target keywords entered by a user.

By efficiently optimising a website for popular keywords related to the on-page content, a website has a better chance of ranking well for keywords relevant to the content of the site.

Before pursuing SEO strategies like those explained below, it is extremely important to get your keyword strategy right. When selecting the right key phrases to optimize each page on a website for it is necessary to start with what your targeted visitors would type in. While broad phrases such as 'watches' may bring more traffic to a shopping cart selling watches, than more specific keywords such as 'Leather strap watches' and 'Rolex watches', the traffic will not be as focused and will generally not convert.

More importantly, broad phrases are very competitive - They are extremely hard to rank effectively for. To get your keyword strategy right it is worth doing some research; there's lots of information available across the web and there's many tools available to help you with this task.

Once you have a selection of key terms you are happy with, I would recommend analysing the following components on your website with a view of optimising them for your target key terms, taking into account that they should each be relevant to the contents of that page:

1) Title Tags

2) META Tags

3) The anchor text of your internal link structure

4) Heading Tags

5) URLs

6) Content syndication

It is also very important to frequently add fresh content relevant to your industry to your website. By doing so, the more often your site content changes, the more frequently the search engine spiders will visit your shopping portal. In this case you may think about adding a web blog/ RSS feed to your website.

RSS feeds enable others to syndicate your content and can increase brand awareness. By adding closely themed news regularly to RSS feeds it means search engines are more likely to recognise the sites as being acutely themed.

Accessibility and SEO factors

The goal of accessibility in SEO is to make content accessible to search engines. This refers primarily to the technical ability of search engine spiders to move through your site.

Thankfully, if you design your shopping carts with accessability issues in mind from the start; making your site accessible to web users whom are blind, deaf and viewing your site using text only browsers, you will find you are already practicing effective SEO.

Amongst many, the following components are some of the most important accessibility issues that spring to mind. You may consider taking a look at the W3C guidelines (http://www.w3.org/WAI/), and identifying those that can affect search engine spiders crawling your site.

E-Commerce Credit Card Alternatives Take Off

Some of the largest e-commerce chains have suddenly started to embrace nontraditional payment methods, with one analyst group finding a 267 percent increase in such acceptance in four months.

The survey was completed by e-commerce consultancy Brulant, which released the full results from both its October 2006 and February 2007 surveys.

Brulant in October looked at the Web sites for the 100 largest online retailers—including Federated, Staples, Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penney, The Home Depot and Rite Aid—and logged what payment methods they accepted, according to Brulant analyst Stephen Morris. Nontraditional payment methods include Bill Me Later, Google Checkout and PayPal.

In February, they went back to the same sites and did the same thing and found that acceptance had almost tripled.

Statistics, though, can be misleading, especially when the initial numbers are small. Although a 267 percent increase sounds like a landslide of nontraditional payment support, the survey also found that only 24 percent of the tracked sites offered any alternative payment.

With 76 percent of sites supporting only traditional credit or debit cards such as those from MasterCard, Visa and American Express, the survey results do not suggest that consumers can take advantage of e-commerce with no credit cards yet. Given that large retail chains are notoriously slow to accept fundamental changes, this is still a very significant development.

Patti Freeman Evans, who tracks retail trends for Jupiter Research, said the rapid increase is "not surprising" given the research her company has done.

Beginning Ruby on Rails E-Commerce is not for everyone. Not only does it assume some prior knowledge of web application development, whether it's in Rails or some other language, but the book also throws a lot of concepts at you all at once. Database migrations, integration testing with domain specific languages (DSLs), many-to-many table relationships -- you'll see them all before you've exhausted 80 pages, and it can seem like a small mountain to climb. Fan Courier sees potential in e-commerce

Courier services provider Fan Courier saw a 45% business growth in the first three months of the year against the same period last year, therefore meeting its 2007 predicted growth agenda.

"The growth rate is exactly what we anticipated for 2007, with the company estimating a total turnover of 32 million euros for this year. We also believe we will retain our position as market leader," said Adrian Mihai, the company's manager.

Fan Courier derived a 22.5 million-euro turnover last year, becoming the leader of the domestic courier market by outrunning rival company Cargus.

The company's growth was prompted both by attracting new clients, and by the fact that the company's clients increased their volume of business.

"Since the volume of our clients' operations is experiencing strong growth, and since they are widening their national coverage, it is only natural that this would lead to a significant rise in courier services," specified Adrian Mihai.

The company attracted 23% more clients in the first three months of the year, against the same period last year. The new clients are from various fields including industry, construction and IT&C.

"Other than that, we anticipated correctly and saw great business potential in electronic commerce, not only in Bucharest, but also in cities like Galati, Constanta, Timisoara and Craiova. Teleshopping activities, which have lately been witnessing a significant growth, contributed, too," added the company's manager.

In the first three months of the year, the company's investments stood at 800,000 euros, with 75% of this amount being used for the acquisition of a further 30 vehicles.

According to company representatives, the total investments made this year will amount to 7 million euros, 3 million euros of which will go to the construction of new headquarters. The remaining 4 million euros will be used for renewing the car fleet, for IT equipment and for personnel training.

Bill To Amend E-commerce Transaction Laws As Early As Next Week

A bill to amend laws pertaining to e-commerce transactions may be tabled in parliament as early as next week in a move to better protect consumers.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said Sunday that if everything went well, he would table the amendment in the Dewan Rakyat next week.

"I feel there is a need to amend existing provisions on e-commerce transactions and the law must be enforced to prevent consumers from falling prey to cheats," he told reporters after launching a CD collection of 10 Bajau Semporna songs at the Karamunsing Complex, here.

He saw the move as necessary following cases of consumers falling prey to various forms of fraud, including get-rich-quick schemes, through the Internet.

Although online investment does not fall under the jurisdiction of his ministry, Shafie said, the ministry would assist in making the people aware of such fraud.

Shafie advised consumers not to be lured by advertisements or online investments for quick profit.

Giving Away Information, but Increasing Revenue

THOSE who don’t have $6,000 or enough prominent connections to get into a TED conference can take heart. The price of admission just went to zero, provided you can settle for a more remote experience.

The TED organization (TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design) runs an invitation-only conference in Monterey, Calif., every year for movers and shakers in business and nonprofit circles.

Yesterday, TED introduced a Web site that offers about 100 of its TED Talks, the polished 20-minute presentations for which the conference is renowned.

The new site will generate more advertising revenue for TED, but more important, conference leaders said, it will expose TED’s content to millions of people who would otherwise never attend the event.

In so doing, TED is at the vanguard of a trend in the conference industry, where organizers have begun to exploit assets that in years past evaporated as soon as speakers left the stage.

“I’m so struck by it anytime I’m at a great event,” said June Cohen, director of media for TED, a nonprofit business based in New York. “That was so wonderful, but now it’s gone. It’s a shame they’re not captured and preserved.”

Ms. Cohen said TED’s organizers began posting last June a handful of free videos from past conferences on TED.com, with “fairly aggressive goals for how I thought they’d do. But we blew past those pretty quickly.” By January, the number of TED Talks on the site had grown to 44, and they had been viewed more than three million times.

Based on that success, Ms. Cohen said that the organization pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into its video production operations and into the development of a Web site to showcase about 100 of the talks.

The presentations are arranged thematically on the site’s home page. For example, visitors can browse on “Spectacular Performance” to find one of 11 TED presentations chosen for the category by TED editors (like a piano improvisation by the 14-year old prodigy Jennifer Lin in 2004), or find 22 TED Talks roughly related to “The Rise of Collaboration.”

“We’re creating a TED experience online,” Ms. Cohen said, “and that’s not about watching a single talk, but watching several in succession that relate to each other in unexpected ways.”

With the new site, each presentation has its own Web page that includes an overview of the Talk, a biography of the speaker, comments from users, links to related Web pages and a way to rate the presentation that differs from conventional methods. Users choose three characteristics from a list that includes “long winded” and “courageous,” among others.

Three of the more than 50 presentations from last month’s conference, including high-definition video of former President Bill Clinton’s speech, are featured on the new site.

From a business standpoint, Ms. Cohen said that giving away the conference’s content in such a highly polished manner has “completely transformed” the organization.

“Conventional business logic would tell you that in a community like TED you have to keep your commodity scarce and expensive to retain brand value,” she said. “But the same year we started releasing most of our content for free we raised our conference price by nearly 50 percent and still sold out in 12 days.”

“This has actually created a huge challenge for us, in how to manage our growth,” Ms. Cohen added. “We have a waiting list of a couple thousand people for the event and we can’t grow it more. So the question is how to expand it in other ways and do more online.”

Jack Pitney, head of marketing for BMW of North America, said visits to the company’s Web site have jumped strongly in the last year, to about 1.7 million people a month. “That’s due to a confluence of a lot of things, but the TED Talks certainly contributed to a lot more people coming to the site,” he said.

Of the 11,000 or so trade shows and corporate events each year in the United States, about 10 percent in the last year have begun to use videos from their shows to generate more revenue, according to Darlene Gudea, publisher of Trade Show Executive Magazine, an industry publication. “Show organizers are realizing that only part of the industry comes to a trade show, leaving a lot of educational opportunities, and revenues, on the table,” Ms. Gudea said.

And trade shows themselves are a booming business. According to a recent report from American Business Media, a business-to-business media industry group, revenue from trade shows last year grew by 10 percent, to $11.3 billion, and for the first time exceeded revenue from industry magazines.

One example of a company that is capitalizing on the trend is Reed Exhibitions, a unit of Reed Elsevier, which organizes about 60 large-scale conferences in the United States each year. Two weeks ago, Reed introduced out ISC365.com, a site devoted to ISC West, an Internet security conference held in March in Las Vegas.

In a test that could eventually extend to all of the company’s events, Reed will soon begin posting videos from some of the roughly 90 sessions held during the three-day event on ISC365.com. Dean Russo, a Reed Exhibitions group vice president who oversees the company’s Internet activities, said subscribers would pay about $300 to $350 to download five of those videos. Other sessions, he said, would be supported by advertising and will be offered free.

Mr. Russo said that about 25,000 people attended ISC West, and about 1,200 paid $400 to $1000 to attend educational sessions. “We’re thinking in the first six months we could bring in at least that many people with the online subscription, and it could potentially be many, many times that,” he said.

Whose domain?: Some residents cry foul over planned improvements

For the second time in three months and the third time in three years, the City Council has authorized use of the city's power of eminent domain to acquire private land to complete street or utility projects.

Eminent domain is a section of law that allows governments to acquire private property for public uses. City officials say they use eminent domain only as a last resort when efforts to acquire property have reached an impasse.

On March 26, the council authorized staff to begin condemnation proceedings to acquire seven properties in the Blue Creek area. The city is seeking easements for a city sewer line to serve Briarwood. Although installing the sewer line will require extensive excavation, the construction area will be reclaimed. Unlike street projects, the sewer right of way won't be easy to find within a few years after construction is completed, city officials say.

City Administrator Tina Volek said the city has reached agreement with the owners of six parcels in the Blue Creek area. Negotiations are continuing with other owners, she said.

Last fall, the council filed suit against the owners of five parcels on Grand Avenue in order to acquire right of way for the widening the street between Ninth Street West and 12th Street West. A district judge has allowed the city access to the properties so the road project can be completed this summer. Construction is scheduled to begin April 23.

In 2004, the city initiated condemnation proceedings to acquire street right of way through the Peter Yegen Jr. Golf Course. The two sides settled on a price two years later and the street project was completed last year.

Eminent domain has been a hot-button issue among property rights advocates for more than two years after a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the city of New London, Conn., to bulldoze people's homes to make way for shopping malls and other private development.

Although the case Kelo vs. City of New London expanded government's ability to take private property, local residents needn't worry about the city of Billings swooping in and seizing people's homes and businesses, said Councilman Richard Clark.

"In that case the court said they could use eminent domain for economic development," Clark said. "But we have never done that before, and the chances of me voting for something like that are zero."

"I hope we don't have to use (eminent domain) any more," said Councilman Larry Brewster. "Every time we've decided to do it, we've used it as a tool for negotiations."

Brewster said the city uses eminent domain only when there's a possibility of a project being delayed. With construction costs increasing at 8 to 10 percent a year, completing a project sooner saves money for taxpayers in the long run, he said.

"This council has been up front that they're not interested in using eminent domain for anything but for a specific public project," Volek said. "It's certainly not the nature of this council to do like they have back East and condemn large parcels for urban renewal."

Although city officials say that that they use eminent domain only as a last resort, many Blue Creek residents still don't like the thought of a sewer line going through their property.

Detta Graham, whose back yard abuts Blue Creek, worries that the sewer project could damage the creek bed and discourage visits from wildlife.

"The sad part is we have all kinds of birds - pheasants, ducks, geese, cranes and turkeys," Graham said. "They're going to destroy the creek bed."

Graham, a real estate agent, said the city offered her $4,200 for one-tenth of an acre for the sewer easement. She said that's well below market value of around $60,000 per acre for similar property.

Michele Johnson, of 2705 Blue Creek Road, is one of the property owners with whom the city has been negotiating. She said the city's eminent domain powers put property owners at a disadvantage.

The city has offered Johnson $3,350 for a 20-foot-wide easement across her property. Johnson said she has offered an easement from 12 to 16 feet wide.

The way the city's offer is written, Johnson said, "the city can do whatever it pleases and the property owner gets to repair all the damages." Johnson said she wants a fair contract, she wants to be reimbursed for what she has spent on legal fees and she wants the city to promise that it will never try to annex her property.

Councilwoman Joy Stevens said the city has agreed to reimburse property owners for their legal expenses as part of a settlement. Although the current council isn't interested in annexing Johnson's property, she said, future councils may decide differently. The current council can't prevent future councils from annexing property, she said.

Johnson has challenged the City Council before. In 2005, she was a vocal opponent to the Heritage Trail Plan, a network of biking and hiking paths being developed in the Billings area. Johnson and other Blue Creek residents were upset because the plan included maps showing potential bike trails crossing private property. Some worried that the city or county might use eminent domain powers to seize property and build trails.

The City Council and the county commissioners agreed to amend the trail plan.

Johnson asked the county commissioners last week to help "rein in the city's abusive actions."

Commissioner Bill Kennedy said the commissioners don't have the authority to intervene in the city's lawsuit, nor can they prevent the city from annexing property. Montana annexation law is stacked in favor of cities, and if Johnson wants to change the law, she will have to ask the Legislature to change the law, Kennedy said.

Wyeth Friday, planning division manager for the City-County County Planning Department, said the city initiates annexation only when the property owners request it.

In December 2004, the city began condemnation proceedings against Yegen Grand Avenue Farms to acquire the right of way to extend Zimmerman Trail through the Peter Yegen Jr. Golf Course.

The two sides eventually agreed on a price of $575,000, avoiding a court fight. Before that, two appraisals were conducted. One estimated the property was worth $478,500; the other put the value at $237,762. City Councilman Vince Ruegamer said the city agreed to pay the premium of nearly $100,000 above the higher appraisal with the understanding that the money would be paid to the golf course.

At the time, city officials said they probably saved money because taking the case to court would have cost more and could have delayed the project.

Charlie Yegen of Yegen Grand Avenue Farms said the case boiled down to a disagreement over how much the property was worth.

Throughout the process, city officials always tried to be fair, Yegen said. He doubts that the city would exercise its powers of eminent domain in order to seize property for urban renewal.

The city's attempt to acquire property along Grand Avenue was complicated when the city discovered underground fuel storage tanks at the site of the former Dairy Queen restaurant at 11th Street West and Grand. A gasoline station operated on the property before it was a restaurant.

Reger Properties Inc., owner of the Dairy Queen property and a defendant in the case, has asked the court to direct the city to pay Reger $294,000, which was the city's last offer.

Reger's legal brief argues that the city should pay for cleaning up any contamination because Reger had already agreed to the city's offer and the city had known that the property previously had a gas station.

Deputy City Attorney Kelly Addy said the city is willing to pay "just compensation" for the property, but he didn't specify a figure or range. The city is still awaiting environmental tests to determine if any of the underground fuel tanks have leaked.

According to preliminary estimates, it may cost about $5,000 to remove each storage tank. If little soil contamination is found, the cleanup costs could amount to a small portion of a $2.7 million road project. A state program to cover the cost of cleaning up underground storage tanks may also be available if contamination is found, Addy said.

For tiny Tuvalu,
a rising sea of worries

Income is rising from .tv domain name fees

Anyone who uses the internet knows there's been an explosion in online video, and no one knows it better than the residents of the tiny nation of Tuvalu. Tuvalu's internet domain name is .tv.

Over the past two years .tv registrations have grown 48 percent, and that's much appreciated by this poor nation of nine islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Tuvalu gets a slice of the fees.

But as so often happens in life, the good is usually offset by something not so good, and for Tuvalu that something is global warming, which threatens to drown the entire tiny nation. One hope is to build a protective wall to hold back the sea. But the cost would be prohibitive.

What is Tuvalu to do?

“The money coming from .tv or any of the other resources isn’t a drop in the ocean compared to what they need for that sort of program for a protective plan," explains Dr. Ifti Ayaz, consul general in London for Tuvalu. "There are nine islands and it will be billions to think of doing anything like that.”

Indeed, in addition to having the distinction of owning .tv, Tuvalu could well be one of the first countries to disappear as a result of global warming. The sea is rising several millimeters a year. And while that may not sound like much, the highest point of the country is only around 5 meters above sea level.

The question is just when Tuvalu would have to be evacuated, if that time should come. Some forecasters think as soon as 50 years.

It would be an end to an idyllic way of life. Though a poor nation by industrialized standards, Tuvalu has to rank near the top in terms of nature's blessings. The 10,000 residents on this chain of small coral islands and atolls have long lived on a healthy diet of fish fresh from the sea, coconuts and root vegetables. Says Ayaz: “Generally people don’t have to buy anything for food. Everything is there. Nature has provided it.”

When the .tv domain was first assigned, it was taken as a further blessing, a true windfall, even though it wasn't all that much money, notes Ayaz. “It supplements the meager economic resources of the country. It is a windfall because Tuvalu doesn’t have to do anything for it."

That sum now amounts to about $3 million a year. It's already helped the country build roads, import cars and exploit its marine resources. And even more revenue is expected. While no one is pegging a dollar figure, it promises to be substantial. Says Jill McNabb, senior manager for naming services for Verisign, which administers the domain: “The better .tv does, the better Tuvalu will do.”

But what happens if Tuvalu eventually disappears under the ocean?

Would .tv live on even if the country did not? Neither Verisign nor Dr. Ayaz, have a firm answer, but it's quite possible Tuvalu would in fact live on, as would its hold on .tv.

As Ayaz explains it, the nation of Tuvalu could well set up somewhere else. And as McNabb explains it, “While there is a country of Tuvalu, there will be a .tv extension."

Meanwhile, elsewhere in popcult, the new thriller “Disturbia” topped the box office over the weekend with $23.0 million brought in. “Blades of Glory,” which was No. 1 the previous two weeks, fell to No. 2 with $14.1 million in ticket sales.

In DVD rentals for the week ended April 8, according to IMDb.com, the Will Smith movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in its second week in release, making way at the top for new release “The Good Shepherd.”

On iTunes for the week ended yesterday, Timbaland’s “Give It to Me” was the No. 1 single for the second straight week, with Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” moving up to No. 2.

In books, the new release “I Heard That Song Before” by Mary Higgins Clark was No. 1 on the New York Times’ hardcover fiction bestsellers list for the week ended April 7, and also No. 2 on USA Today’s chart for the week ended April 8.

Sidney Poitier’s “The Measure of a Man” remained No. 1 on the Times’ paperback nonfiction list, though it fell from No. 3 to No. 7 on US Today’s chart.

The Major League baseball team installed its first Data Domain DD430 enterprise protection storage appliance for local disk backup in November of 2006. The San Francisco Giants IT infrastructure supports both normal business operations for the team's management as well as some user services that are unique to a major league baseball team, such as its video coaching system and homegrown applications for monitoring stats and player rankings. Cybersquatting, speculation hurt trademark owners and sow confusion online

the practice of registering Internet domain names that poach well-known trademarks — is profitable for just about everybody involved. Money is made off of registration fees and advertising, and even the regulator of the Domain Name System gets a piece of the action.

But it’s not so lucrative for corporate officials like Lynn Goodendorf, who heads global privacy at InterContinental Hotels Group PLC.

The Windsor, England-based company owns seven hotel chains, including Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, with more than 3,700 properties worldwide. Each day, Goodendorf gets about 100 e-mail alerts concerning potential trademark infringements from three different domain monitoring services.

Goodendorf said that in most of those cases, she doesn’t know the identities of the potentially infringing domain holders. Their registrations often are private, and when identifying information is available, it may be inaccurate. Subpoenas are sometimes needed to uncover the identities of individuals, she said.

Defensive measures, such as registering domain names that cybersquatters might target, can help, but only to a point. “We have tried to register common misspellings or to have letters transposed,” Goodendorf said. But it’s impossible to anticipate every name combination, she added, citing the cybersquatting site capitolholidayinn.com as an example.

Speculators Rule

As Goodendorf’s experiences illustrate, the Domain Name System is showing signs of being out of control. Speculators now use automated software systems to re-register large batches of expired domain names. They’re also helped by a loophole in the registration process that lets domains be tested for their potential profitability as pay-per-click advertising sites during a free five-day “tasting” period.

The World Intellectual Property Organization warned in a report issued last month that those practices threaten the interests of trademark holders and are causing confusion among Internet users. Francis Gurry, deputy director general of the Geneva-based WIPO, said in a statement that the new methods “risk turning the domain name system into a mostly speculative market.”

Gurry added that instead of being used to identify specific businesses or other Internet users, “many [domain] names nowadays are mere commodities” to be bought and sold.

It’s already possible to make astonishing sums of money selling domain names. Domain Name Journal, an online magazine published by Internet Edge Inc. in Tampa, Fla., reported that diamond.com fetched $7.5 million from a buyer last year and that vodka.com sold for $3 million.

Usability and SEO: Two Wins for the Price of One

Was just interviewed by Mike McDonald of Webpronews again. I thought I'd be more relaxed, the second time around (1st interview was in Chicago), but I was still afraid my words would come tumbling out too fast and I wouldn't make any sense. He and videographer, Richard Easterling are professional, comfortable with what they're doing and do their best to put interviewees at ease. We discussed usability a little and how it relates to seo, which leads me into the next session I covered, presented below. This session is in a ballroom size room and it is full.

Dana Todd arrives. She is the moderator. She's surprised to see so many people show up on the last day...cold room. Every visitor is important to convert. You need to think about making your website perform. Introduces for Shari Thurow. She's a lively moderator. My favorite so far!

Shari is first. Dana and I have been with the conferences since the beginning. She calls it "search usability." Website usability vs. search usability. She loves Jakob Nielsen's view that usability is a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces or web pages are to use.
Are you giving users enough info when they arrive? SEO and usability are not that different. Focus groups measure opinions. There is a herd mentality, the one who disagrees will likely go along with the majority. Usability. Measures whether person finishes a task. Did they click a button? Did they add to cart? Not a matter of being a cool site. Are they completing a desired task and if not, why not? Balance between user and business goals? The customer is not always right. We have to balance what the majority expects. Usability. Addresses search behaviors. Queries, browsing, surfing, pogo-sticking foraging, scanning, reading, berry picking. Search is not a linear process. If people are jumping back and forth between search results pages, that's negative search behavior. They're not finding what they’re looking for. Scent of info, sense of place, user confidence, info arch vs. site nav, interface - key concepts in search usability.

Scent of info = term highlighting in search engines is one ex. Google uses it in titles, ad copy, html title tags, term highlighting in snippets, some urls can provide scent of info. Too much highlighting bugs people because it seems like keyword stuffing. Primary and secondary text serves SERPS. Html tags, copy, meta tag desc.... Whenever a page provides scent of info and sense of place, not irritating to users. Show people a page for 8 seconds, and remove it. Ask them if they remember what the page was about. If they can't recall, not enough keywords to give sense of place. Good places to put keywords are top left. Recommends H1 tag. Breadcrumb trails are good for keywords. Main body.

What do you want people to do? Put that in the middle in the page and or above the page fold. Embedded text links are good for keywords. Navigation links. This is providing a sense of place for people and it also ranks well. She's showing an example of how pages can be optimized for SEO and are people oriented at the same time. Her illustrations show placement of copy, labels, content and links that illustrate this balance. Do your keyword research first, and then do you IA based on that. Site nav is part of the interface. Categorization is the IA, and how you do nav is the interface. She shows primary, secondary, and lower level navigation. Asks users in tests, What level are you viewing? If the IA and interface are keyword focused, people recall data easier, and where they are on a site. This is not keyword stuffing. It's logical placement of keywords to support the people who are visiting the site. She shows how this also ranks pages at the same time.

Nav schemes - text yes, FLASH now. User what your users prefer and put supplemental text links at the bottom as alt. Graphic nav, make sure you have relevant cross linking. Number 1 design mistake is cross linking. Cross linking is internal. There are vertical - breadcrumb, cat/sub/product and are a "you are here" directive. Breadcrumbs help form a mental model of the site. Don't make the homepage the main emphasis. Embedded texts are great because you look at a page of content and it is boring but links are keyword focused and provide scent of info. Alphabetical nav links can be helpful for some search scenarios. The key she points out is to provide alternative nav for different types of users and needs. Alternative links for products are good for things like related products, for ex. Sitemaps are huge positive. It's a map of sites global nav. If you have to submit your sitemap to engines, then your IA is poor. Keywords in urls count. Characters in URls are stop signs to SE's. Hyphens in urls are not the end of the world. What urls will your users remember better? Dynamic urls are hard to recall. Directors or subs? Both are fine for people and engines. Sub domain or main domain? Both are fine with SE's and people. Whenever possible your urls should reflect your sites arch.

She's over her time limit. She's going to talk about MedicineNet.com. She got the project of making the site of making it user friendly rather than seo friendly. She shows examples of on page optimization for human goals. Then they tracked and it shows skyrocketed conversions, ROI with no zero PPC investment. Shari is a detailed speaker. This is my third time covering this session. Her strength is in the fine details and illustrating to the audience on-page placement of elements, which I can't do justice for in this post. Her screenshots are a better way of communicating her ideas. She shares a great deal of info.

Once you get involved with usability you fall in love with it. The reason you are here is because you want people to do what you want at your website. Get people to your site. Why spend money on seo when you neglect to measure where they're going and what they can't find? If they can't find it, its not there. It doesn't exist. Same as seo. If not in engines, it doesn't exist.

Homepage should have clear directions. SEO links out to the rest of the site and keyword focused navigation. What you sell must be very evident. Exit and bounce rates, when they search and they land on a page that has no info on what they just searched for, they will leave. They need a reason to stay and go somewhere from there. There must be a goal for your visitors. He shows Hall of Shame sites.

You can shop now or enter the site, which one should I do? Funny ex. of a site for cars. Users have a sense of fear in their choice. "I made a wrong decision at the very beginning” They want to shop but also want to go into the site. Pet site example - he has the audience cracking up. Is there anything on the homepage that shows it’s a store? It says product not products. Nav needs to be more desc. of what people will find. Shows a wine site. Ads from Google on a homepage are illogical because it takes people off your site. The color contrasts were terrible. Black links. Dark colors on dark colors. You need high contrast colors.

Taxonomy= good organization. User research comes in handy. What do people call your products and how do THEY group it? Not you or your company. New customers? Existing customers? Address your users’ needs immediately, right from the homepage. Understand what your visitors are looking for. Bring it forward. You can divide up by categories, as one suggestion. Groupings by how people do tasks. By price? Ratings? Popular? He shows a wine site that constantly changes their homepage based on research on how visitors conduct tasks on the site. This analysis explains what they want to do and the site nav and content, and keywords back it up and support this.

You need an established hierarchy of categories. For seo, multiple links with keywords. Customer based nav groupings. Don't hide links. Make them look like links. Buttons that don't look clickable are a no-no. Don't make people think about what they need to do. Use keywords in product links, Alt text, captions and labels. When you group in product pages, don't put so many categories on one page forcing a long scroll down. Don't clump all products on one page. Don't be afraid to add new pages. Shows an example of missing sub-navigation and faulty nav. Shows example of sub-navigation that is redundant. Stop selling so much. Far into a site, people want to focus on just the product, not all the other stuff you throw into the top and side spaces. Shows a good ex of ThinkGeek site and how they do sub-nav well. Other ex. is nav by type, price, etc. Call products by what they are. Be product specific about product content. For seo, call products what they are. The want benefits, value prop., how it connects to your users vs. just product stats. Sales decisions are emotional decision. You need to sell to the logical and emotional sides How will product make my life better? Problem solve keywords. Make your nav solve problems.

Shows a toilet aquarium site and everyone laughs. Site homepage is one big graphic, and everyone boos. Landing pages, does this page meet my needs and expectations? Shows his now famous Butt Paste web page. It's on a baby site. Has everyone in stitches. It was featured on Oprah. Search is for diaper rash ointment. That keyword is on the page in one place. But product is "Butt paste", a product name which is not what people search for.

Shows example of third party shopping cart on another site. New UI to deal with. Shows a sushi site. Has a buy button but no price. What happens if someone clicks a buy button. Shows a science site...rubber band powered racers. The page had 3 different product names on one page reinforced with content and big visible buy now button. Shows a real website warning that failure to review company's policy may be damaging financially to the user. Funny. He shows a product page with content that clearly describes product benefit to the user if they use it. Asks for review or upload you using the product. High rank because of extra content. Where do people enter and exit your site. Hilarious screenshot of with people using search engines and he represents Yahoo and Google with MSN sneaking onto the page. Avoid using slang. Words that are lost in translation. International users - not everyone have 5 digit zip codes. Not everyone lives in a state. Show shipping before they buy. Make pages easy to navigation, easy to find.

Because Wikipedia entries routinely show up in the top 5 search engine results at Google, some black hat SEO's (and a few clueless beginners) realized the value of a link from the online encyclopedia and began link spamming blatantly. So recently Wikipedia posted the "nofollow" tag to all outbound links, purportedly to stop SEO Spam by reducing the value of those outbound links.

SEO's weren't the only ones to notice the value of Wikipedia entries. Microsoft became the focus of Wikipedia editors wrath when someone at Microsoft attempted to buy some edits to entries unfavorable to Microsoft. That gaff was a PR nightmare for Microsoft and encourages others to attempt underhanded methods of editing articles to favorable from negative or controversial.

Because reputation management is so critical for companies, and because Wikipedia entries can follow right on the tail of company web sites in the search results pages, it has become routine for PR departments, marketing departments and product managers to monitor what is said about their company in Wikipedia. The problem comes when they learn that they can edit entries and just jump in there and do that before becoming valued members of the community - and don't even engage those who are respected community members in conversation through accepted forums and public discussions.

Against this background, Search Engine Strategies offered a session in New York on day 3 of the conference titled, "Wikipedia & SEO" where the decscription was:

This session looks at appropriate ways to interact with the service. It also examines if there's more that can be done to make Wikipedia editors more accepting of marketers and to make marketers more understanding of the Wikipedia community goals.

The key lines there are "appropriate ways to interact" and "understanding ... community goals" because, unlike press releases, marketing campaigns, sales sheets and testimonials, Wikipedia is FACT based and neutral.

So the SES NY session opened with Neil Patel of Advantage Consulting Services, giving examples of how he had tested the limits of spamming at Wikipedia by attempting to link spam under multiple accounts. He said with a grin that his entries were very quickly deleted and he was banned from the community. He continued on that track by explaining to the audience what NOT to do, including:

* Link building

* Add biased or sales info

* Delete accurate info.

Reversing from the negative, Patel then suggested those items that bring value to the community:

* Don't be a dick

* Develop a reputation as an editor

* Add information first, links second

* Follow the notability rule.

* Wikis are everywhere - find them and contribute, edit.

Jonathan Hochman of JE Hochman & Associates followed with a stern warning that if you make the Wikipedia "Spam Blacklist" that you are extremely unlikely to ever get off that list, which is universally applied to all wiki's using the system - not just Wikipedia. Hochman also claimed to have many examples of those with Wikipedia links getting more traffic from Wikipedia than from Google searches for their primary keyword phrase and that those clicks convert at a higher rate than searches do.

Don Steele, Director of Digital & Enterprise Marketing, Comedy Central took the mic next and explained how Wikipedia was a top ten referrer for the company, which gets a total of eight million pageviews monthly. Mak Prosecutors Come to Their Senses on Public Domain Issues

Yesterday the U.S. Attorney’s office prosecuting the export case against Chi Mak came to it’s senses and reversed the position it had taken on exports of public domain data to China. Josh Gerstein has the details in his excellent article in the New York Sun.

As we’ve reported before, the prosecution in the Mak trial tried to claim that the ITAR forbids export of public domain data on military items to China. The prosecution also argued that the State Department “certification” that the documents in question were “technical data” under the ITAR was a conclusive and unreviewable determination that they were not public domain. We explained here, here and here, why these arguments were wrong.

What’s interesting here is that the prosecution changed course apparently as a result of our critical posts on the government’s positions and Josh Gerstein’s excellent reporting on the issues we raised. When we started this blog, our hope was to provide an informative and entertaining take on export law for other professionals in the filed. We didn’t really expect that we would have the impact that we did on a high-profile case.

The institution has been taking tentative steps into the digital realm for years, but those efforts began to culminate Thursday in the kickoff to a summit meeting to plan a national network of “digital humanities centers” — usually, independent or interdisciplinary university entities that apply digital techniques from the sciences, such as computer science, to the traditional humanities. The NEH wants to expand these existing institutions into a coalition of centers that would help it coordinate digital humanities projects and distribute grants.

It’s doing that by assembling, for the first time, representatives from both digital humanities centers across the nation and funding organizations, including some of the biggest names in the business — Google’s “chief Internet evangelist,” Vint Cerf, gave a plenary address — including the Library of Congress; the National Science Foundation; the U.S. Department of Education; the Mellon, Sloan and MacArthur foundations; and the J. Paul Getty Trust.

“It’s a new frontier for the humanities,” said Cole. What began as earlier digital efforts within existing NEH divisions has led to a desire for more collaboration between existing digital humanities centers as well as the creation of new ones. If there was a sense that these efforts have become more urgent, it was thanks mostly to the American Council of Learned Societies’ Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences, whose 2006 report informed much of the discussion at yesterday’s session.

The NEH has already started a number of initiatives pushing the institution toward a more digital focus, committing “a great deal of time, energy and resources,” according to Cole. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants, for example, offer seed money to scholars who want to apply digital methods to their humanities research. Most of the applicants, Cole said, are first-timers.

But NEH’s digital push isn’t necessarily proceeding without friction. Some scholars have contended that certain requirements for grants have favored applicants whose archival work is available online, which might hamper important work that cannot easily be digitized. Cole, however, said, that “we are not going to be draconian” about digital requirements.

James Harris, dean of arts and humanities at the University of Maryland at College Park, noted at the beginning of the meeting that “digital humanities centers across the country are at the center of this revolution.” Some of the goals of these institutions, he noted, include making digital archives available to the public — with free access — as well as engaging “diverse audiences” on new platforms, such as cell phones. The group of digital centers isn’t officially designated, but prominent examples are the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities and the Center for Computing in Humanities, Arts, and Social Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Representatives of the NEH and several digital humanities centers wouldn’t predict the outcome of today’s proceedings, but the consensus seemed to be that if successful, the meeting would lead to a greater understanding — and hopefully more meetings. At those future gatherings, and others, the NEH’s vision of a digital humanities coalition would — with funding — become more of a reality.

Counsel sought in domain-name clash

The county election board will seek special counsel to investigate a complaint filed over Internet domain names in a contentious race for the county controller’s office.

But after an executive session to discuss possible candidates Thursday, the chairman of the board said it is uncertain when the appointment will be made.

“We’ve all indicated that we will try to move this through as quickly as possible. Once we’ve determined who this person is, I don’t think it will take very long,” said election board chairman and former county commissioner Jerome P. Knowles.

Knowles, former county tax claims director Susan Koch and Pottsville attorney Lynne Bressi are serving in positions usually held by the county commissioners except in years like this, when the county board stands for re-election.

“They felt they had to take action because the solicitor’s office basically recused itself,” said county solicitor Paul J. Datte.

Datte would not comment on his office’s decision.

Democratic controller candidate Melinda Kantner, however, said the move stems from her persistent criticisms of Datte in his roles as former solicitor for the North Manheim Zoning Hearing Board and current solicitor for the North Manheim Sewer Authority.

Kantner serves as a member of the North Manheim Township Planning Commission.

On March 29, Kantner filed a complaint with the election board alleging that her opponent, Republican Jason Gherghel, violated the Pennsylvania Election Code when he purchased Internet addresses incorporating her name, making it impossible to establish a campaign Web site.

Gherghel said Tuesday that he had made offers to give Kantner one of the Internet addresses, an assertion Kantner denies, and that he has since relinquished the addresses.

“I’ve been telling everybody it was my campaign. It was my decision to do it,” said Gherghel on Tuesday, blaming his political naivete for his willingness to go along with the idea.

On Thursday, however, Kantner said Gherghel has disconnected the domain names from his own campaign site, where she said he had been forwarding visitors, but still retains the Internet addresses using her name.

“He has not relinquished his contract,” she said.

Gherghel also denied Tuesday that a decision by former Schuylkill Teen-Age Republican Chairman Scott Thomas, a 17-year-old Pottsville Area High School junior, to step down as leader of that organization was fallout from the domain-name controversy.

On Thursday, Knowles said the election board would meet again at 2 p.m.

Monday at the courthouse to continue reviewing possible appointments for a special attorney to investigate the issue.

However, he thought it unlikely they would reach a decision Monday.

Knowles said the election board would first need to contact a proposed candidate to determine their willingness to serve in the position, establish compensation and then direct the county solicitor’s office to petition the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas.

Eminent domain issue in mall case

HARTFORD - Attorneys for the city and for Ocean State Job Lot argued before the Connecticut Supreme Court Thursday over whether Bristol can evict the Rhode Island-based retailer from the downtown mall.
The case seems to rest on whether the city's purchase of the property amounted to the same thing as use of eminent domain.
In Ocean State Job Lot's lease, it says that if a certain amount of the mall property "shall be acquired or condemned by right of eminent domain for any public or quasi public use or purpose," the landlord may terminate the lease.
The city's position is that the lease allows it to terminate the lease because the city acquired the property for a public use.
But Ocean State Job Lot's argument is that the city did not use eminent domain to buy the mall property and so cannot simply terminate the store's lease.
"This is a contract interpretation case," said attorney Houston Putnam Lowry, who represents the city.
Bridget Gallagher, the lawyer representing Ocean State Job Lot, said the city never used its power of eminent domain when it bought the mall two years ago - and couldn't have at the time, because there was no redevelopment plan for the property.
She said no city board ever passed a resolution to use eminent domain and that no official ever testified that the city intended to use that power.
"No such evidence was ever introduced," Gallagher told the panel of five justices.
The city wouldn't have been able to continue to use Lowry, Gallagher said, if it intended to use eminent domain to take the property, because Lowry also worked for the former mall owners and would have had a conflict of interest.
"The city did not want to use eminent domain," Gallagher said.
At one point during Lowry's argument, Lowry had a somewhat contentious exchange with Senior Associate Justice David Borden.
"Of course the city has the power of eminent domain, once it goes through the formal statutory requirements," said Borden.
Lowry said the city was en route to using eminent domain, having taken the first step, which he said is negotiating for the property. According to Lowry, there isn't any difference between the city buying a piece of property and taking it by eminent domain.
"A vote to purchase is synonymous with a vote to condemn," said Lowry.
Ocean State officials have repeatedly said they want to keep their downtown Bristol location, and John Conforti, the company's chief financial officer, said that is still true.
The store's lease runs until 2014, Gallagher said.
Conforti, who attended the arguments before the Supreme Court, said he was impressed by the session.
"The justices came across as very astute," said Conforti. "This is such a higher level."
Conforti said that Lowry's argument was "fluff" to Gallagher's "fact."
City corporation counsel Edward Krawiecki Jr., who also attended the Supreme Court arguments, said the burden was on Ocean State Job Lot to show why the appellate court ruled in favor of the city.
"The city's case is very strong," said Krawiecki.
But Krawiecki acknowledged that it is "possible" that the Supreme Court will overturn the lower court's ruling.
"It's hard to predict what the Supreme Court will or will not do," said Krawiecki.
It may be many months before there's an answer.
Krawiecki said if the justices do not deliver their ruling by mid-June, it will be at least September before they do.
The city could condemn Ocean State Job Lot's lease instead of pursuing an eviction, Krawiecki said, but he said this route was chosen instead.
"The last administration did not want to condemn," said Krawiecki. When Mayor William Stortz took office, Krawiecki said, the case against Ocean State was already under way.

CNNIC survey results show that 15% of the Chinese Internet users can write down about 10 commonly used English domain names when surfing online; over 90% of internet users believe it is easier and more convenient to remember and use Chinese domain names for online surfing; and about 53% of Chinese netizens believe that giving priority to developing Internet services within a native language environment will help promote the development of the country's Internet business.

CNNIC says that in 2007, all the mainstream browsers based on Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera and Firefox will support Chinese-language domain names. They will also hold touring lectures to popularize Internet use of .CN domain names.

Chinese officials have often said that China's Internet security is best maintained by the use of .CN domain names because China has more direct control over those top-level domain name servers and registrars, while China has very little control over .COM or other TLD services.

One year after it was launched for the general public, the .eu domain name has exceeded all expectations, with more than 2.6 million addresses registered.

2.5 million registrations as .eu closes in on .info

Europe's top-level internet domain, .eu, turns one year old this week and has already become the continent's number-three regional domain name.

The domain, which is offered to individuals, organisations and companies within the European Union, has attracted more than 2.5 million registrations, said Martin Selmayr, a spokesman for the European Commission in Brussels, during a news conference the same day.

Demand for .eu domains has been strongest from Germany, where 31 percent of registrants are based, followed by the UK (17 percent) and the Netherlands (12 percent).

"As you see, .eu interest has nothing to do with interest and positive attitude to the European Union," said Selmayr, alluding perhaps to the UK's traditionally sceptical attitude to European politics.

France and Italy follow tied at fourth place at 5 percent.

Applications for the domain were accepted from trademark holders and public bodies beginning in December 2005 during a ‘sunrise period’, and then from others, including the general public, from April 2006. The domain is maintained by the non-profit organisation Eurid vzw in Belgium.

The 2.5 million domain names, most of which are in use according to the Commission, makes .eu the number three European top-level domain after the UK's .uk and Germany's .de.

"At the worldwide level we are close to .info and already half of .org," said Selmayr.

Online Casino Domain Names Up for Grabs at CAC 2007

`.eu' Domain Names Top 2.5M in Year One

More than 2.5 million ".eu" Internet addresses have been registered since the European domain name launched just over a year ago, the European Commission said Wednesday.

Many worldwide brands -- from companies like Air France and Versace to environmental campaigners Greenpeace -- now have a ".eu" address, officials said, singling out non-European brands Sony Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus for also choosing an ".eu" address in ad campaigns.

"After just one year `.eu' has become a well-established part of Europe's cyberspace," EU Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said.

It has become the seventh most popular suffix worldwide and the third for Europe since it launched on April 7, 2006, topped only by Germany's ".de" and Britain's ".uk."

Strongest demand for the ".eu" address in the last year came from Germany -- making up nearly a third of all applications -- followed by Britain and the Netherlands.

SES - Searching for SEO Meaning at MSN Live सर्च

In the past, I've been critical of MSN for not participating in conferences. Today I'm going to be critical of them because they did participate. Steve Berkowitz, Senior Vice President, Online Services Group for Microsoft, was the keynote for day 2 of SES NY 2007 and it is one of the first keynotes I've regretted attending. I would have rather slept in.

It sounds as though Mr. Berkowitz has drunk the corporate Kool Aid. In his Q&A session with Danny Sullivan this morning at the New York Hilton, he called Microsoft "Amazing" no fewer than 10 times. (Actually he did reserve one of those for Google.)

Now his move from Ask.com - which he characterized himself as a "rowboat" - to Microsoft - which he calls a "Cruise Ship" by comparison, would no doubt be quite a transition.

To be fair to Berkowitz, I've heard tech industry commentators talk about Microsoft in much the same way - characterizing the people there and the projects they work on as nothing short of magical - but the morass of corporate culture somehow stifles all the smart people and waters down their projects until they are weak and wimpy.

It's interesting that Ask.com is only a point or two away from Live.com in search referrals for many web sites. Even though (as Berkowitz has said) the little Ask.com rowboat is small, nimble and capable of a change in direction by dipping an oar in the water - MSN Live takes forever to change course - neither has been able to gain significant market share from Google.

Normally I like to quote liberally from keynotes, but that would make this article sound like a puff piece for MSN Live, because Berkowitz had so little to say if it wasn't glowing praise for his employer. He did say repeatedly that great ("amazing") stuff was coming, but wouldn't say what it was.

So all we have to base our expectations and insights on are silly things like Ms. Dewey (who I had heard about but hadn't experienced "live"). She unexpectedly interrupted a Danny Sullivan Question to Steve Berkowitz, stepped up onto the stage in character of Ms. Dewey and continued her act (played by Janina Gavankar) interrupting and answering questions posed by Sullivan.

The little show was clearly planned, Berkowitz had to know about it, but Sullivan seemed a bit bewildered and flustered. The routine made absolutely no sense to me and the audience didn't respond terribly well to it either. I think Ogilvy Advertising should be fired from the Live Search account because this character and the website is absurd.

For those who haven't experienced it, Ms. Dewey answers questions after you type something in a search box. It is usually something cryptic that might apply to nearly any question, and there are 600 short film clips which make up her store of responses to questions.

The algorithm for that must have taken some engineers far too long, even though it doesn't work terribly well. Then after the odd (sometimes ascerbic) answer from Ms. Dewey, you get a group of three search results on the right side of the screen. If you hover your mouse over the bottom of the third result, then more results scroll upward. These are clearly Live.com results but scrolling isn't obvious and only three answers to your question?

I don't get it - who wants to wait 5 - 10 seconds for that flash movie to load, then wait 10 - 20 seconds more for the response to load (Ms. Dewey is thinking...), then wait for three results where it isn't clear there are more?

Further, there is a "Best of Dewey" button - which is reminiscent of "I'm Feeling Lucky" so I typed a question in the search box and clicked "Best of Dewey" waited 10 seconds and got my query replaced by something I didn't type. OK, I get it, most popular clips - but they're not good enough to justify that 10 to 15 second wait for a new clip each time you click the "best of" button.

So after sitting through the keynote, I'm not sure what I came away with, other than a page and a half of notes I can't easily assemble into an article. So to prove I was there and show how little of substance was discussed, here's a small chunk of my notes as an example.

Depth of engagement with users. Yahoo cross-network traffic. Search better integrated into MSN in a much cleaner way. Advantages of Microsoft is it's reach. Data center perspective. Storage perspective. We're moving everything from the desktop to the cloud. Microsoft has some amazing stuff going on... Great resources. Licensing business. subscription business.

I'm bewildered by Ms. Dewey, I'm confused by how Microsoft can be so "amazing" and still not produce a substantial and competitive search product, I'm left wondering where Steve Berkowitz is leading Live Search and I am utterly at a loss for what to say about Live.com except maybe to ask, "Where's the search referral traffic?"

Study: E-tailers See Value in SEO, PPC Spending

Internet retailers are shifting more of their marketing budgets to buy pay-per-click online ads and improve their organic search results, writes Internet Retailer, citing a survey it conducted.

Some 30 percent of responding merchants say at least 50 percent of their sales come via search engine marketing; 82.8 percent say their PPC spending will not be reduced in 2007; and 75 percent say search is performing as well as or better than other forms of marketing. Only 12 percent say SEM underperformed compared with other marketing efforts.

Somewhat surprisingly, most e-tailers prefer to keep their efforts in-house. Only 26 percent use an outside agency or PPC program, and 66 percent say they have no intention of contracting out for such efforts.

Some 39 percent emphasize PPC over organic SEO, and 34 percent put the focus on natural search; 26 percent say they use both equally. For sales conversions, 46 percent say organic search has better results, and 37 percent cite PPC as having a higher conversion rate; 16 percent say they're equally effective.

Eighty percent of e-tailers are making changes to their website text to match what people are searching for। For the most poart, those engaged in PPC efforts plan to trim the number of keywords they manage but increase spending on those that survive the cull. The intents is to improve ROI on the most effective keywords.

First up is Stephan, who talks about RSS. Says you want to go full-text, embed tracking bugs so you know how many readers you have. Notes that most blogs have a ton of feeds, ones for posts, comments, categories, comments on posts, all sorts of things, and you should definitely make sure users know you have that. Says you should make sure to customize things in the feed, especially the description of the blog (otherwise it might be “Just another WordPress blog”).

Make sure your blog is optimized. Use tags so that your blog software will have a page for that tag and rank in search engines for that tag. You should try to have a cool title, but an SEO-perfect title tag. There’s an “SEO Title Tag” plugin for WordPress that lets you customize those, which is great (must install!), you can assign any unique URL a unique title tag.

Already, most useful SES session I’ve ever attended.

You can create tag conjunction pages, combining multiple tags for great SEO. Says you should do what ProBlogger does, putting featured posts in blocks at the top of the page. Don’t use “permalink” to link to your post, use the title (unless you want to rank well for permalink, dope). Try sticky posts, which always appear at the top of your category page to introduce it (WordPress plugin: Adhesive).

Says this is effective, his 15-year old daughter got up to the first page on Neopets related terms in just a few weeks, just by listening to her dad’s tips।

Next up is Rick from FeedBurner. He talks about redirects, which are important because search engines are now consuming feeds, too. Auto-discovery must be well-implemented on your site so readers can find it. Says that Feedburner lets publishers style their feeds in spite of the browser trying to do so. Mentions Yahoo Pipes, which lets you mix feeds.

Talks about Feedburner using clickthrough URLs to track feed actions. Also, Feedburner lets you choose the kinds of redirects you use for your feeds, a 302 or 301. They recommend you don’t use a 301 permanent redirect, in case you don’t like them (honest guy), and that Feedburner will actually 301 the feed back to you if you ask.

Talks about how feeds are coming from more than just blogs; they’re coming from stores/retailers, search engines, many broad ways. Says full-text vs. excerpt should not be an issue of publishers vs. readers, but just a question of usefulness. If you have an excerpt feed, TechMeme can’t see what posts are linking to others, and you might not get on TechMeme. Says we will only see more sites like TechMeme in the future, and keeping them out will hurt you.

If you don’t want to see your feed in search engine, the noindex tag will be honored by Google and Yahoo, and Feedburner includes an option for that. Rick says you need to effectively advertise your feed, which is easy, and so many people do it wrong. Not including an autodiscovery tag is stupid. Point to all relevant feeds. Pinging is important, because waiting for spiders to get to your site can take a long time.

Adding rich media to the feed is important, especially if you are producing podcast/video blogs। And for gods sake, give the show a title and notes, not just an episode number, or else no one is going to find your podcast in a search engine.

Next up comes Sally from ExpansionPlus। She talks about how producing content about a topic/brand, making sure it has a feed, and submitting it to feed search engines, it will be found by interested people and get you traffic and awareness. Ultimately, you will get to good positions for your top terms, and lots of terms you deal with and didn’t even realize you were targeting.

Last up is Greg Jarboe of SEO-PR, and he asks how many bloggers started a blog and started seeing it in the search engines relatively quickly. They did SEO for StubHub, a ticket marketplace, creating 15 blogs around the categories they deal tickets in. Few people want to read a blog talking about your company; they want a blog about news, and you need to use your companies position to create blogs you have an expertise in.

Focusing on the content builds a relationship with readers, turning you into a publisher that happens to drive customers, but you don’t shove it down their throats. You give the consumer useful, actionable information they can’t get anywhere else. In StubHub’s case, they have info from their marketplace that is of interest to all fans, even those not buying.

They targeted terms fans would use, as opposed to terms a ticket buyer would be interested in. They would up with posts about hot tickets. You don’t want unimportant blogs linking to you; you want real people caring about your real information, and that gets you real links.

SEO-PR is beta testing a tool called Buzz Logic, showing you who the top bloggers are, but also who they are using for sources, and who uses them for sources. This identifies the real opinion makers, and they added them to their blogrolls. Mentions the recent patent applications for Google Blog Search, which includes analyzing blogrolls.

Says that the way blogs work is that you need rankings before you get visitors. Interesting theory, could be absolutely right.

Hot Banana Software has been popping up at conferences in North America this week showing off sleek new features of its web content management system.

Everyone loves new features, but more fascinating is Hot Banana’s ongoing focus. Hot Banana continues to position itself as a tool for marketers, rather than a run-of-the-mill Web CMS product.

At the Search Engine Strategies Conference and Expo 2007 in New York City, Hot Banana introduced the features in its Version 5.5 release that help optimize its CMS product for search engines and allow marketers to improve the results generated by their web pages.

As Krista LaRiviere, a general manager of Hot Banana, points out, “Web sites that rank well organically with the search engines are more valuable than those that do not, they deliver more traffic and a higher ROI for the marketer.” The new features include the SEO Center and the Analytics Center, both designed to improve search engine rankings and results tracking without significant search engine or IT expertise.

SEO Center includes all the standard tools for search engine optimization, aimed at allowing non-technical personnel to keep pages updated to stay on top of the page elements required to maintain decent search engine placement.

The Analytics Center allows Hot Banana’s users to track data from a number of web analytics vendors — such as ClickTracks, WebTrends, Google Analytics and IndexTools — to follow items such as paid keywords. Analytics Center will add tagging code from supported analytics companies to each web page.

But New York isn’t the only place Hot Banana has been marketing to the marketers. At the Gilbane conference in San Francsico, Hot Banana presented a white paper demonstrating the benefits to marketers of CMS-driven marketing systems for delivering and tracking marketing results.

For those of you interested in perusing the paper yourselves, Hot Banana’s “Strategic eMarketing: Converting Leads into Profit” requires that you register yourself as a marketing lead (eating their own dog food!).

The crux of the white paper is that poorly-organized sites and one-off marketing campaigns don’t deliver a desirable return on the investment made to create them. That’s easy enough to agree with.

The white paper then continues to argue that a CMS marketing platform allows marketing professionals to implement and measure the return from that platform by mixing CMS and lead tracking systems. Since Hot Banana offers a marketing-oriented CMS system that includes lead tracking, the white paper is unsurprisingly designed to convince you to purchase Hot Banana’s product, particularly now that you can take advantage of the version 5.5 release features.

Of course, there are other companies eager to mix marketing and CMS, but that just makes the race that much more interesting for the consumer।

As more companies add blogs to their marketing mix to get greater traction in the search engines and more traffic to their Web sites, it seems only natural that the search engine optimization pros would soon focus more closely on optimizing these blogs.

While not a new technology, RSS feeds have increasingly become subject to extensive optimization, according to panelists in a session titled “SEO Through Blogs and Feeds” here at the Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo at the Hilton New York.

Many companies have adopted blogs to generate excitement about a product or service or to add clout or authority to their reputation or brands. Whether companies are looking start a new blog or to enhance an existing blog, optimizing them does not have to be an expensive or difficult endeavor.

“How easy is it?” asked Stephan Spencer, founder and president of interactive agency Netconcepts LLC, Madison, WI . “It’s pretty darn easy. My 15-year-old daughter, within two weeks, got her blog in the No. 10 position [on Google] and now she’s No. 3.”

There are many things bloggers can do to boost their prominence, the most important of which has to do with the way RSS feeds are customized.

To do that effectively, Mr. Spencer explained the importance on focusing on title tags and specifically mentioning the blog name at the end of the title and not at the beginning.

He said it also helps to put the tag name in the title on a tag page and to customize it with additional keywords for display on a home page. Overriding title tags with custom tags, also known as a title tag plugins, is also beneficial.

“There are things you can do to control how the search engines do or don’t access your feeds,” said Rick Klau, vice president of publisher services at FeedBurner, who spoke about the benefits of optimizing blog feeds.

“Redirects [from feeds] are increasingly important because search engines are paying more and more attention to feeds specifically,” Mr. Klau said. “Anecdotally, we’re hearing from a lot of publishers who are saying that their content is being discovered more quickly because of RSS feeds.”

Another important technical consideration has to do with URLs, according to Mr. Spencer, who told bloggers to rewrite URLs so they contain keywords, to use hyphens, not underscores, and maintain “legacy URLs” even after switching blog platforms to add traction to blogs in the search engines.

Beyond these optimization techniques, blogs can be enhanced with anchor text optimization. For instance, making the post’s title a link to a permalink page and looking for opportunities to request revisions to anchor texts on inbound links create greater prominence for a blog.

Mr. Spencer also suggested internally linking back to old, relevant posts within the body of a blog post and to avoid using the nondescript terms “here” or “previously” as the anchor text.

Additionally, heading tags were subject to optimization। Adding specific category names on category pages for post titles — not for dates — would improve a blog’s performance as well.

Danny Sullivan is moderating the session. He ask about who has heard of wikipedia?
Many people raise their hand. This is a pretty packed session. My laptop had a case of senioritis so I missed the first few mintues. Sorry Neil.

Neil Patel is up first, and starts explaining about wikipedia and what it does. He talks about the Colbert report and his campaign to make sure the elephant population was well represented. He explains how wikipedia is beneficial and what not to do on wikipedia.
How to do you add links to wikipedia? Only add reliable links from authorities sources. Neil next discusses how to add images. He gives an example of a bottle company and putting an image of a bottle that improved the brand of the company. Wikis are everywhere.

Jonathan Hochman is up second. He says wikipeida gets more pageviews than myspace and other areas. He says we have a lot of bright SEO’s here, but wikipedia ranks first for the term search engine optimization. SEO have enough reputation problems already, so try to remember wikipeida isn’t a linkfarm. The wikimedia Blacklist means “no links for you”. He says there are people that like to hunt for spammers. The blacklist is a bad thing, because you will not get a link from wikipedia or all the other 2000 wikis out there. Search engines could eventually look at this public list and take it in account. Yet that is doubtful. Wikipedia links actually deliver traffic. To reduce spam wikipedia adds no follows. Ha, he mentions the attempt of some SEO’s to create entries for themselves in wikipedia. These are the non-notable people. He explains that Matt Cutts was non-notable because the majority of people don’t know who he is. You need to state your cause. I wonder if Jon is an editor? He says that articles that fail to assert notability, supported by reliable sources, are nominated for deletion. Writing an article about yourself or a client is a conflict of interest. He says not to get involved about an article about yourself or your competitors. He says read the conflict of interest guidelines. Barry Schwartz posted an article on wikipedia about himself. Wikipedians jumped on this article to delete it. There was a few editors that changed their minds about Barry’s article and decided to keep it. Barry is notable they decided. COI doesn’t prevent you from participating. Learn the policies and customs and work with other editors to get your points into the article. If you have an article you have no control to edit that article or influence it in any way. He puts up an example of the Criticism of Wal-Mart page. On this page Wal-Mart can not do anything about this page. Ideally, the page needs to have a pros and cons section of the article. With an article about yourself, you can delete spam, remove slander, revert vandalism, and state your view on the article talk page. He also gives an example for Green Zap, and how the companies reputation was ruined because they did some bad things and it found its way into the search engines. Oh my! Wikipedia is a bit stick for generic search terms. Even if your own site can’t outrank the competition, Wikipedia probably can.

Don Steele from Comedy Central is up next. He is here to talk about how wikipedia works with Comedy Central. Comedycentral.com is the online arm of Comedy Central Cable Channel. They use a lot of methods to market their content in a diverse manner we can create momentum, capitalize on buss and are constantly driving traffic to Comedy Central. He puts up a video of Steven Colbert about changing a wikipedia entry and that enough people believe it, then it becomes true. So why do we care about wikipedia? All the factors that contribute to a high search ranking have been the object of much research, debate, speculation and reporting over the past few years. With the amount of data that has become available over that time, however, have we reached the saturation point of SEO knowledge?

Jason Lee Miller posted an article earlier this week that highlighted the top ten items that search algorithms are looking for when crawling a site, according to a panel of SEO experts. This is no doubt valuable information for anyone who is new to the search optimization realm, but how much insight is offered to veterans in the industry?

This comment seemed quite telling, “I go over the article but it’s the same thing again and again. There was not a single thing that was new.”

When you really stop to think about it all, can you really pinpoint any major innovations that have significantly impacted what the engines are looking for when indexing a site’s content? Let’s be honest; it all still comes down to two factors: 1) links and 2) keyword density. Every item on that list is related to one of these two fundamental aspects of search optimization.

Should SEO even be part of the conversation anymore? The technical aspects have been quite well established and covered ad nauseum. What new information is being offered anymore that truly goes above and beyond the general consensus of knowledge across the board?

I would be interested to know how the search community feels when they come across that new blog that offers “inside tips and tricks” to improving search ranking.

Perhaps it’s time to really stop and assess the value to the search community in continuing to wax poetic about topics that, quite frankly, have been bludgeoned to death.

What do you think of this summary of the history, origin and evolution of the SEO industry?

1990 to 1993

The first search engines are developed. Apparently, the fist one on record is Archie. This work is done mainly at an academic level.

1994 to 1995

The first commercial search engines are developed: Galaxy, Lycos and Yahoo.

There is already a research, analysis and experimentation on the best ways to submit and format a site so that it is found by the newborn search engines.

It is highly probable that at this point the term SEO is coined.

Eric Ward started the first “Web Promotion” business.

1996

Internet is already seen as a commercial phenomenon. Big corporations start to invest in Web Sites as a mean to promote their brands.

Altavista led, by a small margin, a growing market of search engines that already gathered: MSN, Lycos, Excite, Yahoo, Netscape and Info Seek.

The Google founders started work on their idea.

1997 to 1998

SEO starts to be an intrinsic activity for the promotion of Web Sites.

PPC (Pay per Click) is born: Overture, the first PPC company is founded.

1999

The year Google comes out to the world, with venture funding and a lot of publicity and expectations.

Payed ads and banners started to flood the Web, constituting the main means of on-line promotion.

2000

Flash, music, animated gifs; multimedia is the cool thing.

Internet searching sees an explosion in traffic; and SEO turns more complicated and valuable. Heavy weight corps start to compete. Difficulties and confrontation of ideas of Web designers, webmasters, clients, users, CEO’s and SEO’s grow high.

2001

“Black Hat SEO” shows up. During this year, hackers found and developed lots of techniques to “manipulate” search engines, many times getting high positions in search results for pages with low value or dubious content.

Google gains number one spot in Internet Search Market.

2002

SEO becomes a popular matter among hackers and Internet market leaders. There is a big proliferation of SEO forums.

Google becomes, until this date, the search engine of excellence; practically monopolizing the market’s attention.

This is the year of the biggest SPAM impact on search engines, propelled mainly by the black hat SEO’s.

2003

In November, 2003, an index actualization at Google shakes the positions of thousands of sites that seemed to be fixed, until that date, at the top positions. This works havoc among webmasters and SEO experts.

2004 to 2006

Google begins to win the battle against SPAM.

Business start to invest great sums on the Internet, again. Even more than before the bubble. Google develops AdWords and Adsense: a 2006 over 6.000.000.000 US$ of profit business.

2007

There seems to be a consensus among experts:

* Rules and adequacy standards for SEO are set. * Techniques to “manipulate” search engines are no longer effective. * It takes brightness, professional work, and above all: a good Web Site.

Today there is no bigger mystery than developing a site following the search engines rules (or simply Google’s), quality content, dedication, and good ideas.

SEO Professionalism/SEO Tantrums

Last week, a situation arose that rather surprised me. I was poking around the news search engines to see if any of the new information I presented at Search Engine Strategies in Munich was picked up by journalists or bloggers (often, one and the same people). I was a bit stunned to see one of my esteemed colleagues wrote an article about some of my previous writings.

What stunned me? First, I have a great deal of respect for this colleague. He's one of the few speakers for whom I'll rearrange my schedule in order to attend his sessions. Second, we're both heavily involved in the area of search usability. Third, (and this one's the kicker), he completely misinterpreted everything I wrote. Thank goodness another usability colleague who set him straight in the blog.

The situation inspired this week's column. Granted, there's plenty of bickering among SEM and SEO professionals. At what point does the bickering become unprofessional, and how can all of us, as an industry, come together and establish standards that benefits everyone: us (SEM/SEO professionals), our clients, and the search engines?

Black-hat vs. white-hat SEO professionals

Perhaps the most bickering occurs between white-hat and black-hat SEO professionals. I'm just as guilty as the next person for contributing to the verbal and written spats.

I'm going to come clean about my opinions about my black-hat colleagues because, quite frankly, I believe my opinions have been widely misinterpreted for many, many years.

I've made it pretty clear I don't agree with black-hat practices. I don't understand people who practice them because none of us would make a living from optimization or search advertising if the commercial Web search engines didn't exist. I see no need to exploit the search engines, and I'm very fortunate to have established a business and academic career based on these beliefs.

I recognize, however, that many of my colleagues don't share my beliefs. Considering our clients often compete for the same or similar keyword phrases, our clients' business goals are going to clash. As I've written previously about competitive SEO, my way of eliminating the competition is to report search engine spam on a regular basis.

Nonetheless, I have a great deal of respect for my black-hat colleagues. I've known many of them for years. Some actually started out in Web design and eventually ended up doing full-time SEO. I once worked at a Web hosting company. I know how much detail's involved in server maintenance. Not my cup of tea, to be honest, but power to those people with that special skill set who genuinely like doing that type of job.

It takes a great deal of intelligence, skill, and attention to detail to maintain search engine traffic through black-hat techniques.

Granted, I honestly believe most of my black-hat colleagues make erroneous cause-and-effect conclusions, and I believe they're quite delusional to think they know search engines' algorithms. (It's sort of cute, actually). But at no time did I ever state (or believe) these men are stupid. Quite the contrary. These men are very, very intelligent, and their attention to detail is impressive.

I simply don't agree with their way of doing business. I'm rather fond of many of my black-hat colleagues. David Naylor, in particular, is quite funny. I adore his naughty sense of humor, and he's one smart cookie. If I decide to continue graduate school in Manchester, I intend to be a gentle thorn on his side, just for kicks. I know he'll make me laugh, as he does now.

Insults vs. professional disagreements

The point at which we cross the professionalism boundary is when we resort to name-calling and exploiting another person's name in blogs.

In SEO, we're going to disagree. For example, as I have continued my academic education and training in user-centered design (UCD), which is at the very core of SEO and communicating a positive brand, I see connections my colleagues may not otherwise see as they're not exposed to it.

Does this mean I resort to name-calling and insults? Not really, though I may succumb to a weak moment and vent for a few minutes. Have I been a victim of unnecessary name-calling and insults? Certainly. I'm sure many of my colleagues have been undeserving victims of bickering.

I hope the SEO industry can get to a point at which bickering becomes unnecessary. We're going to disagree. Besides, if everyone agreed with each other, how would we learn?

Conclusion

That said, I'd like to end on a more personal note.

Gentlemen, I understand you want to encourage healthy debate as much as I do. However, it isn't necessary to exploit anyone's name (including my own) or resort to name-calling to get a point across.

That said, I won't take your bait. If you want my contribution to a topic or discussion, you'll have to do it in a way that's far more professional than insults, or twisting words to suit your needs.

I, in turn, will attempt to reel in my diva tantrums.

The e-mail messaging that clogs inboxes around the world is known as spam and with good reason: It is unwanted. Its solicitations are rarely acted upon. These annoying distractions offer little value.

Now that we know what's wrong with this method of marketing, what could possibly be right with it?

E-mail marketing (please don't call it spam for just a moment until you consider the argument) offers one of the most cost-effective ways to market to consumers. Start-up costs are so small that any company can integrate a smartly designed campaign into its marketing program in short time. And, with a few well-established rules of engagement, chances are it will make a reasonable return on investment very quickly. In some cases, the results, like the Internet itself, are immediate.

What's more, e-mail isn't just a way to get your brand in front of people. It's an opportunity to establish engagement and dialog with customers. Here are a few rules of thumb that are sure to show success for even the newest e-marketers.

Rule #1: The e-mail must be anticipated

Why waste time and effort sending e-mails to recipients who don't need what you sell, don't want your products and know nothing about you? We recommend sticking with "opt-in" e-mail lists to optimize results. Don't have an address list of hot prospects primed to buy? Not to worry. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways. You can entice individuals to visit your web site with special offers to those who opt-in. Banner ads can also drive people who have an interest in your offers. And of course, marketing materials of any kind should include your web site. Once there, make it easy for people to act, driving your sales.

Rule #2: The e-mail must be relevant

We recommend that our clients use information they gain about their customers selectively to keep them informed. If you are a jeweler, for example, and one of your customers purchased an anniversary ring for his wife in 2005, your messaging can remind this customer of the approaching date and also provide selective information about new jewelry designs and styles that would be perfect for the up-and-coming anniversary. This puts the sender in the position of providing information that is needed and wanted. It's time sensitive and it provides new product information based upon past behavior.

Rule #3: The e-mail must offer value

Research shows that consumers act on offers of value more than anything else. Having a sale on widgets? Customers who bought widgets in the past are the perfect customers to buy widgets when they go on sale! The most successful e-mail marketing programs track this data and use it intelligently. I often ask company owners to think like their customers and answer the question, "is my e-mail address worth parting with?" In this day and age, it's the equivalent of asking for a phone number that's privately listed.

Rule #4: The e-mail must be integrated

For maximum benefit, your e-mail messaging must be integrated with both content and commerce feedback loops in the form of product up-sells that leverage database data to meet needs (e.g., the next most likely product model) and surveys that allow that allow the customer to provide data points that are used to better service and connect with the consumer.

CMS web design: Mambo, Joomla, or Drupal?

When it comes to web-based CMS, there are a variety of open source solutions; while each one doesn’t offer everything, there are 3 that clearly stand above the rest: Mambo, Joomla, and Drupal.

A content management system(CMS) is a method used to provide nearly complete control over content on the Web; everything from managing users, documents, various media, and a host of other things (depending on which CMS you use) is completely automated with an entire web structure including the page itself.

Aside from installing a CMS on your website’s server, they are generally easy to use and can save a webmaster weeks worth of development time or just be used by individuals who know completely nothing about web development.

There is, however, a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using a CMS; understanding the data structure (ie. sections, categories, content) is usually the largest obstacle to overcome. Fortunately, each CMS holds its own forums with a friendly community that’s always willing to help.

I choose these three not necessarily because of their ease of use, but rather their functionality. If used properly, these systems can provide a wealth of abilities.

Keep in mind they are by far not simple; you get what you work for. If you’re looking for something simple, it’s likely that these are not for you. A simple CMS, in the end, will offer a simple result.

Joomla is very similar to Mambo, as it was rebuilt from the Mambo structure back in 2005; many bugs were fixed at the time, and a few security issues were addressed as well.

When it comes down to it, you’ll be deciding between Joomla and Drupal; Mambo is an earlier development that was abandoned in 2005 and has many bugs. If you choose Mambo, I can promise that you’ll be spending much time searching message boards and modifying PHP scripts.

In terms of installation, Joomla is clearly the winner; Drupal is significantly harder to install, and requires the user to have certain high-level privileges to the server’s database.

Drupal’s appearance is a far cry from that of Mambo or Joomla; although, looks should take no authority over usability. Drupal is, however, easier to customize; often times a simple change in Mambo or Joomla would lead to other elements not displaying correctly.

As you’re sure to find bugs in all open source CMS, in my experiences, I’ve had better performance overall with Drupal; it is tightly coded, which means fewer bugs and a lot less headaches. I’ve never had the pleasure of wasting an entire day looking for a bug fix on Drupal as I had with both Mambo and Joomla.

While both Drupal and Joomla can be search engine friendly, I’ve found that Drupal offers SEO without sacrificing security as Joomla has been known to do; in addition, Drupal has a more logical URL structure that we would call ’reader friendly.’

In terms of community support, Joomla clearly has a larger following; with this, advantages include overall better support and more add-ons (ie. modules, themes).

One major advantage Drupal has is its category structure known as taxonomy; this is by far Drupal’s strongest feature. With Mambo or Joomla, content is added into a SECTION/CATEGORY/CONTENT structure; this limited method of sorting content has numerous disadvantages when users are navigating your site.

Taxonomy allows you to cross-categorize all content across your site globally, and will classify content automatically in virtually an unlimited amount of ways; as an example of taxonomy, you could set up keywords (known as a vocabulary) to cross- reference pages that contain those keywords to greatly aid in category management and information distribution.

In order to make the decision between Joomla and Drupal, I suggest first trying both out at opensourcecms.com. Ultimately, the decision should come down to how you’re going to use the CMS.

For a site that mostly offers static content with very little updating, such as tutorials, static information, and directories, I would certainly suggest Joomla.

If you’re looking to have ‘real-time’ content on a day-to-day basis, such as a blog, news, or review sites, it may be in your best interest to use Drupal; it is slightly more difficult to learn than Mambo or Joomla, but will surely prove more satisfying in the end.

First Look: Dreamweaver Pairs Well With Photoshop

For Web-design professionals, Dreamweaver CS3's integration into Adobe's Creative Suite bundle of applications is the ideal marriage of graphics programs. Fundamental to the revamped Dreamweaver is the software's tight integration with Photoshop.

Former Macromedia Studio users might take a while to adjust to seeing Photoshop open when they double-click an image on a Dreamweaver page (in the past, Studio's Fireworks app would have handled such tasks), but Dreamweaver and Photoshop go together so well that I'm betting it won't be long before those same people are saying, "Firewha?"

I tested a shipping version of Dreamweaver CS3. Alone, the program is $399; alternatively, you can buy it as part of Creative Suite 3 Design Premium ($1799, or $599 as an upgrade from CS2) or Creative Suite 3 Web Premium ($1599, or $499 as an upgrade from CS2 or Macromedia Studio 8, Studio MX, or Studio MX 2004).

I admit I was taken aback the first time I saw an image from a Dreamweaver page layout open in Photoshop as a .psd file. But the integration works well and is bidirectional: You can copy all or part of a Photoshop image and paste it directly into Dreamweaver; a dialog box opens for choosing the options you prefer to optimize the image for the Web. When you subsequently double-click the image in Dreamweaver, it opens in Photoshop with all its original layers, masks, and other .psd attributes.
Interactivity Reigns

If you've been looking for a quick and simple way to add the interactivity of Ajax to your site, Dreamweaver provides the Spry framework of widgets and effects. The Spry JavaScript library includes XML-based tables, tabs, and form-field validation, the appearance of which you can customize via CSS. Spry effects let you make elements fade in or out, grow smaller or larger, or move across the screen, all without any scripting, and without requiring any server components. Adobe claims the Spry code is 99 percent HTML, so it should be easy to edit and customize. While a few hard-core developers will surely appreciate the ability to crunch their own JavaScript, using the Spry components with as little alteration as possible is simpler.

The program also adds a Browser Compability Check that lists the problems your site may have when opened in various versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, and any other browsers you want to add; meanwhile, Dreamweaver's code view highlights potential CSS-related problems by underlining the suspect code in green.

Current Dreamweaver users can upgrade to the new version for $199 and continue to use it with Fireworks, Flash (now itself part of CS3), and the other former Studio apps, but they'll be missing out on the new version's biggest productivity booster, its direct link to Photoshop (and to a lesser extent the other tools in CS3). The tandem of Dreamweaver and Photoshop is indeed greater than the sum of its parts.

Dreamweaver CS3 integrates Spry framework for Ajax

Adobe tackled integration of the application on two fronts. First, the Spry framework for Ajax is integrated into the application and second, the integration of Dreamweaver with the rest of the Creative Suite has improved dramatically.

“This is just a huge workflow improvement for Dreamweaver users,” Kenneth Berger, Adobe’s Dreamweaver Product Manager, told Macworld. “When we looked at what was important for this release it was Photoshop because of the overlap of the users — an overwhelming percentage of Dreamweaver users also use Photoshop.”

Adobe said that after speaking with its customers it became clear that many designers were struggling with the process of moving content from full-page design mock-ups in Photoshop into Dreamweaver.

With Creative Suite 3 designers can select any portion of a design in Photoshop — even across multiple layers — and paste it directly into a Dreamweaver page. Dreamweaver will present a dialog box where you can specify optimization options for the image, and that’s it — no further work is necessary. If, at some point, the image needs to be edited, double-clicking on the original layered PSD file opens in Photoshop for editing.

“One of the things that made me excited about this release is that we attacked the huge problems that customers have in designeing for the Web,” said Berger.

The other big integration feature in Dreamweaver CS3 is with the company’s Spry framework for Ajax. One of the new Web 2.0 buzzwords, Ajax is a development technique for creating interactive web applications.

Dreamweaver now allows users to visually design, develop and deploy dynamic user interfaces. Using Spry Widgets, commonly used Ajax Elements are available from a tab in the Dreamweaver toolbar.

Widgets include XML-driven lists and tables, accordions, tabbed interfaces and form elements with validation. Spry Effects is another way to enhance the look of a Web page. The effects allow users to make elements grow, shrink, fade and highlight.

One of the problems affecting all Web designers is browser compatibility. Making sure a Web site works for the Mac, Windows and Linux browsers is often a difficult task, but with Adobe CSS Advisor, the company hopes to solve that problem.

In addition to just providing feedback that there may be browser compatibility issues, Dreamweaver CS3 now provides links to Adobe CSS Advisor, which contains information on the latest issues, offers tips and suggestions and is maintained by and for the user community.

As with previous releases, Dreamweaver CS3 also provides users with sample designs to help get you started with your design.

“What do you do with a blank page — it’s always difficult to start from scratch,” said Berger. “We are not trying to tell you to use our designs, these are just starting points so you can make it your own.”

Managing CSS has also become easier in this release. The Manage CSS feature makes it easier for users to move CSS rules from document to document, from the head of a document to an external sheet and between external CSS files. You can also convert inline CSS to CSS rules, and place them where you need them by dragging and dropping.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 will begin shipping in April 2007 to customers in the United States and Canada. Dreamweaver CS3 will cost $399 — upgrade options are available from the company’s Web site.

We wouldn't go so far as to call Adobe's Dreamweaver CS3 a trivial upgrade, but we do expect it will appeal to a rather limited audience. For this version, Adobe focused on two primary areas for enhancement: CSS and Ajax. Both are certainly worthy of attention. CSS is one of the major pain points for Web designers, while Ajax is the latest fad in Web development — plus Adobe has its new Spry framework for Ajax that it needs to promote. However, unless you're really struggling with complex, nested, multilinked stylesheets, specifically want to author to the Spry framework, or need better back-and-forth with Photoshop, there probably isn't a lot here for you.

On the CSS front, Dreamweaver CS3 will ship with a passel of layout templates, and a Move CSS Rules option is marginally more helpful than cut and paste for consolidating stylesheets. Errors that pop up in the enhanced Browser Compatibility Check link to Adobe's new CSS Advisor community, although it seems superfluous to create a new community when there are so many. Plus, at least with the Dreamweaver CS3 beta, it drops you at the door of CSS Advisor and you've got to search from there. It really needs better integration to be truly useful.
You work with Spry widgets the same as any other Dreamweaver object, adding and editing items via the Properties palette (or coding).

As a platform for experimenting or getting started with Ajax, Dreamweaver's Spry implementation is straightforward and non-threatening. It comes with some interface widgets, data connectors and objects, and a handful of special effects behaviours, such as Shake, Slide and Squish. A more thorough look at the Spry implementation will have to wait until Dreamweaver CS3 ships later this spring.

Dreamweaver CS3 costs £335 (ex. VAT), or £139 (ex. VAT) to upgrade from a previous version.
